Better and Really FAST DECENT Search program works on both X-86 and X-64 all builds.

Actually isn't it a bit confusing calling X-86 the 32 bit version whilst X-64 (a lower number) refers to the 64 bit version -- it's a bit like counting in Chinese (sorry any chinese folks reading this).
I know historically it referrs to the Intel 8086 processor and all its subsequent developments but logically why not refer to a 32 bit OS with a 32 in the number (or maybe Computer Logic doesn't work like that).

Anyway back to the post

Brilliant FAST search utility that also works via right mouse click from the explorer bar so you can for example click on a drive (or a folder) and do, a SIMPLE search (like back in the days of Windows 98 and Windows 2000) before they bollixed it up and made it too complex.

The only caveat is that it prompts for UAC when you use it -- I'm looking to see if I can make an exception for this program.

It can't be very useful if it only uses file and folder names for it's database.

Windows Search (either the XP, Vista or Windows 7 version) can search using file and folder names, as well as related metadata, which makes it infintely better. For details, see the Advanced Searches tutorial I created in the Vista Forums. The information there works with either version of Windows Search.

And if you really, really don't want to use Windows Search 4.0, you can always use Google Desktop.

it's much easier to type for instance *.TIB on a menuline and get all the *.tib files back on say your 1TB "E" drive plus any that are in sub folders.

If you have say 6 or 7 X 1TB disks on your machine or Network a quick file search is really appreciated.

The Right Mouse (context) function is really useful and quick.

The purpose of this utility isn't to REPLACE any better stuff such as finding strings within files or metadata but simply as a very quick method of just finding FILES / DIRECTORIES via a right mouse click.

Google search is no good for this type of application.

Your post refers to ADVANCED searches -- the whole point of this one is that it's SIMPLE and does "exactly what it says on the tin" -- no more or no less --it's purely a FILE / DIRECTORY searcher.

However each to their own.

Well, sure, but Windows Search does that to. Searching for file or folder names with wildcards, like you want. That's the whole beauty of Windows Search. Using wildcard parameters, like *.txt or *.pas works, but you always have the advanced capabilities right there, when you need them, without the need of additional software.

I'm downloading the search utility you mention, so I can have a look for myself and there give a more informed opinion on it...

If your drive is indexed by desktop search you can do that in .. 2 clics.

Open Explorer windows in "detailed view" search the column title "Type" and clic on the little arrow. So you just have to select the type of file you want to see.

2 Clics, no text to type.

And you have in front of you the available types of files in the location, you may not search something which doesn't existe.

Most funny: if you often do the same search: save the result and you can access to it whenever you want it'll be always up to date, thanks to the magical indexed search.

Another one Ive used is Locate32 Web Site - Home which comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit.

This one errors out on me in build 7048 X-64

get message cannot open database file xxxxxxxxxx

Now IMO if it needs a database file it should CREATE one the first time its used --

thanks for the link anyway --always worth trying out this stuff.

You might want to consider getting 7057 since 7048 did have a number of issues.
