dear sevenforums user...

im looking for a new 22" monitor to be my second monitor on my laptop. the primary usage is for watching 720p videos and a bit of reading pdfs and docs as well.

i have a limited budget of $150~$220.. from the monitor products they sell in my country, i could get low-end e-ips model like asus ml229h or aoc i2352vh for exactly $220.

on the opposite end, there are 22" TN monitor that i could get like $160 samsung and AOC $150 e2250swd..

since im not really good with IT... i wanna ask you all.. with that budget, does the low-end E-IPS trumps pricy TN monitor, picture quality wise..?

-ended up with dell e-IPS panel-

Hello again KP well personally I would go 24" with either this BenQ GL2450HM ($169) here or this
BenQ RL2450H ($199) here. I don't know how prices compare between there and down here but surely it could not be a lot.

That is if you have the space to put it - the difference between the 22" and the 24" is a no brainer.

The BenQ's I like best too just a quality product:)

But if it has to be a 22" then this is good Dell S2240L :) ($149) here

anw... yeah.., so i still couldn't follow your reply... so is it better to get lower end E-IPS panel.. or should i stick with TN monitors...? provided that both cost around the same $180-$220ish

ps:the benq rl2450H cost $370 here... odd pricing huh

Hum that is some heck of a price difference from the little I know the TN have a faster response and the IPS a better colour quality so taking that as rough guide it really depends on what you plan to do with your machine in the future.

For what you are doing now personally I would go for the colour quality rather than the response time as for me it is a much of a muchness, and I myself would have a job picking the difference. Plus you did mention too you like picture quality too.

Out of the two you mentioned first up I would pick the AOC purely because it has good reviews like this AOC i2352Vh review | Monitors Reviews | TechRadar and it is just within your price range plus it is 23" - the clincher for me as 22" is ok for tester machines like I have here but for plain easy viewing the 23" just runs rings round the 22":)

hello~.. i initially wanted to get 19" monitor as i only wanted to use it from 15-25" distance multitasking (of course a bit farther when watching video)

but since IPS started with 22-23" (and way more options on the 23 than the 22), in your opinion with that kind of short distance... is it too big to get 23" compare to getting 22"

on my price range, there are AOC 2353 philips 239c4qhsb dell u2312hm asus ml229h and the cheapest of all is lg ips 225v

do you have any experience with looking at LG monitor, or any monitor brand you tend to lean to from those options?

thankss~ :D

No mate I haven't had nay experience with LG and I have seen many posts with problems on this brand. Out of the rest you have quoted the AOC , Philips, and the Dell are the pick of the bunch if they come within your price range.

I have had both Dell and Philips monitors and they are very good AOC I haven't but they always seem to get good reviews. But it is a shame about the BenQ as it is just brilliant.

As for sitting too close I use 24" monitors on three of my machines and I sit no more than 24-26" from them and I have to say I just couldn't use anything less sized now, I would find it irritating to be honest. If you are worried about the pixels being visible - don't it isn't an issue. Plus if you want to sit a little further away for videos then alls good and you can use a little longer hook up cable if need be:)

oh that sounds good icit2lol...

btw, just curious... some brands like AOC and asus offers HDMI... so, i know that if i wanna use the monitor as a TV someday i could do that.

but dell u2312 only have dvi-d and display port... if i wanna use the monitor someday (not now) as a cable TV... is it possible to do so with the HDMI to DVI cable,, and.. how about the sound? just put external speaker on the microphone jack or smthn....?

Sorry for late reply mate am on night shift at the moment.

In a nutshell KP the HDMI carries both graphics and audio signals and the DVI graphics signal only so you would need to set up the sound separately if you use a DVI link up.

In my mind there is no appreciable difference in the graphics quality between HDMI and DVI the latter I use myself because I have dedicated sound cards in all my machines for sound / audio.

So to answer the question you need to use the HDMI hook up should you need the monitor to operate as a TV from say a video recorder / player or from the laptop.

If you get the one that has both types of connection then you have the choice to use the monitor as required, but get the best that you can the cheaper brands are in my view inferior in every way:)

I meant to add too that I use DVI also because the HDMI connections are prone to easily dislodging.

due to odd pricing here... im gonna go with dell u2312 will come back after i get it on monday... :D

btw.. just curious,, which one is your preferred brand of storage between 3.5" WD mybook essential vs seagate freeagent go flex desk, or do you go with other brands...?

im using WD mybook external 3.5 at the moment but i read amazon reviews regarding the flimsy socket and im thinking of probably buying another storage along with buying the monitor... kinda wondering other people opinion regarding their preferred brands of storage :D

Hum nice choice on the Dell from what I hear they are real good.

The drives I always go Seagate I tried the Go Flex but apart from being detachable not that much advantage over a normal "straight" drive, mind you I only had the 500GB small one the larger ones may be better.
