Big problem when reinstalling Win7 RC 64-bit

So, a few days back I built a PC for my friend and we installed Windows 7 RC 64-bit in it. Then we realized that the audio didn't work at all, and we tried every kind of driver we could find for it, but it didn't work out. Yesterday we decided to try reinstalling the OS in case something had gone wrong during the installation (there was a power failure when the OS was up and running but still installing drivers).

Well, I rebooted the PC and put in the RC installation disc. I clicked the format button to clear the HDD and tried installing, but when it reached 6% in the "expanding files" section the installation crashed and said something about some .dll file missing. Well, today we decided to try again, and I took the HDD home and formatted it with the Win 7 disk management option by deleting the partitions (the 100mb thingy that the OS makes when installing and the rest) and made a new NTFS partition. Then, back to my friend's house (what an awful lot of driving, I tell ya). I plugged the HDD in and tried to reinstall, it complained again about files missing but the error message was different this time. I'll attach a picture of the text, sorry for the crappy quality of my Nokia 6555's camera.

The setup is something like this:

About the sound problem: My setup, which is visible in my profile, has had no audio problems so far and doesn't seem to be getting any. I'm wondering if my friend's mobo's sound circuit could be broken?

And first of all, how can I get the OS installer to work? I've tried 2 different installation disks of Win7 and both of them give the same result. How can any files be missing, shouldn't all the files be included with the .iso image I burnt on the DVD? It worked for my PC and worked for the first time on his PC too. Is something wrong with the HDD, and what to do with it if there is?

My friend is pretty much pissed and almost ready to whack the whole PC into pieces with an axe. We had to resort in installing Ubuntu 8.10 so he can even access the Internet (the sound doesn't work on Linux either, btw) since neither of us has a copy of XP or Vista.

If I forgot some crucial information about anything, please ask. I'd like to have this solved since... well, you know why.

I would try re-downloading the RC-1 client. Chances are, something was corrupted in the original RC-1 you're using if you've made multiple CD burns from it with the same results.

Asentaessa ota toinen muistipalikka pois, jätä RAM vain paikkaan 0; x64-versiolla on ollut usein taipumus asentua paremmin pienemmällä RAM:lla. Koomista sinänsä, onhan 64-bittisen yksi idea juuri se että se osaa käyttää enemmän muistia kuin 32-bittinen

Sama juttu kaikkien ulkoisten vehkeiden kanssa: irroita lisäkovalevyt ja CD/DVD:t, kaikki USB- ja Firewire vehkeet jättäen vain hiiren ja näppiksen. Kovalevy kokonaan uusiksi, siis partitioiden poisto ja uudelleen luominen sekä formatointi. BIOS:in resetointi tehdasasetuksiin. Asennus, sen jälkeen taas toinen RAM-palikka ja muut kamat koneeseen ja menoksi.

Älä kysy miksi, mutta näyttäisi näin menetellen usein toimivan. Tsekkaa vahvistus tälle kummallisuudelle vaikka täältä.


I just told him that he should (IMO) burn ISO once more, this time with slowest possible speed, reset the BIOS to factory settings and remove all external devices before doing a clean install. I also told about what Zigzag3143 told in another post about this strange thing about x64 installing better with less RAM.

What kind of disk did you burn to?

CD or DVD

RW, +R, or -R?


Its best to use CD -R or DVD -R. If you used those, Re-download the RC and Burn it to another disk.

Does anyone know if I can still install Win7 aside Ubuntu, isn't the Linux HDD file format or whatever it's called in English something that Windows doesn't know how to read as it uses NTFS?

I'm planning on trying the RAM thingy. In case it doesn't work, I'll install the 32-bit version. My friend is buying 7 anyway when it is released, so he just has to get by with something for a couple of months.

CONN3R: I used a DVD+R disk since I had those lying around. EDIT: Yes, I used the slowest possible burning speed (4x) and I burned it with PowerISO.

Today we're heading back to the store to consult them about the mobo. Hopefully we can get a replacement.

Linux, or rather the Ubuntu flavor of Linux, will typically use ext3 for its partitions, though it can run in a myriad of other partition formats. But NTFS and ext2/3 are not compatible, so you'd want multiple partitions to run Ubuntu and Windows 7 on the same PC/drive.

The Windows 7 boot manager can point to a Linux partition to boot but might not recognize it on install. In other words, you might have to use BCEdit to edit the Windows 7 boot manager/loader file.

I'm not sure if you can use any Linux boot manager to boot to a Windows 7 partition. Anyone else know if this works?

I used a DVD+R as well and burned it on a Lite-On DVD burner with CDBurnerXP at middle speed (forgot which, but not fastest and not slowest). I had no issues. I installed it from a SATA drive (Blu-Ray/DVD burner from Lite-On) on my Windows 7 system.

Try clearing the cmos and reinstalling. It's worked for me in the past.

Thanks for everyone for the help. It seems the RAM trick worked, we took out the other RAM and it started working. But the internet connection was down, we couldn't update the OS... :S

Also, we took the mobo out and returned it to the shop. It has a 1 year warranty (luckily) so we'll be getting a replacement soon enough... well not enough, but anyway.
