Big windows

hi all
my friends son came to me with his new laptop which he says he changed the resolution now the windows and icons are to big to do anything with. i have tried restoring to an earlier time and uninstalling the graphics driver in safe mode but to no avail. can anyone come up with a sulution to this please.

That utility can be used to change resolution from a command line.
This will only work if you know the default resolution of the laptop's display though.
The format is simple though
at command
QRes.exe /x:800 /y:600 where 800 is width and 600 is height
on a laptop made anytime recently it's more likely something like 1440 x 900
This would have to be found on the manufacturer's website under the laptop's specifications.

Although it's also possible somehow the text size has been set to like 300% or something, if that's the case it isn't a resolution issue.

thank you for that, but i forgot to add the wallpaper is the correct size

the only thing I can think of outside of that is reapplying a default theme.
right click the desktop press the up arrow once hit enter, then press the down arrow once and hit enter. If the system is set up in the typical fashion this should reapply the default theme.

Shame. I hoped it was something simple. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.

Change the screen resolution to the highest setting available. You CAN make changes even if you can't see the entire window. It takes some time and patience, but there are keyboard shortcuts for everything. Trust me, I've done it dozens of times.

yeah but you also made that bomb out of a toothpick and a button off a old jacket.


Seriously I'd normally first suggest you update the graphics driver.
If this is also occurring in safe mode though the graphics and even graphics settings are most likely not the problem. It almost sounds like some of the accessibility options for the vision impaired have been activated.

Using the repair feature on the windows 7 disc may fix as may this.

The user should be able to tell from the available resolutions if the driver is the problem. If the highest resolution available is very low, like 640x480, then yes, there is a driver issue. Compare the resolutions available with the native resolution of the screen (Google for it) and that should be easily resolved.

Something else just occurred to me, if this is an hp laptop it could have a magnify feature among it's 'fn' key options.

I don't know exactly what model we are dealing with here though.

got it at last. after trying all suggestions i took the restore back further even though the first time i tried it i took it to before the problem occured when i took it back further it worked. thanks everyone for your help i will drop in now and again now i have found this forum
