I have an Asus U47A laptop that recently took a little fall (~3ft.) while it was running. It immediately let out a pretty loud and alarming sound that I have never heard before. I am not completely lost when it comes to computers, but I fear it was the hard drive.
When I go to boot, I get a black screen saying "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device" When I restart and go into BIOS, under the "Boot" tab I have "Windows Boot Manager PO: Hitachi HTS547575A9E384" which is of course the hdd that was in it.
I was not given a Win7 disk with the computer and I cannot for the life of me find any information anywhere else on the internet now after a few days of searching and trying every little thing. If I remove the hard drive and place it in an enclosure, Windows 7 (on another machine of course) wants to format it immediately. Do I just need to realize the drive is done and get another? I'd love a SSD and almost made the jump a few months ago and now I'm kinda irritated I didn't, but if I do go buy another drive, after the price of another Windows copy I may as well buy another laptop and then I have a second in pretty nice condition (minus a hard drive of course) The pertinent facts the best I can remember the are: (and please feel free to ask any questions, I'm the one here trying to get help so I'm really just trying to get any ideas of what I should do at this point)

Windows 7 64bit
Asus U47A
Intel i7
8gb ram

Thank You in advance for your help

I fear you may need to accept the drive is possibly damaged, at this stage though you have nothing to lose with the drive, assuming you have your data backed up and theres nothing you need on the drive I think I would let the other machine format it and see if anything can be done, best case you wipe the drive and are able to put it back in the machine or use as an external drive worst case it goes in the bin
SSDs are not as expensive as they used to be and I think are a really great upgrade for any system just depends on what size you need

You should not need to purchase another copy of windows, provided you have a windows COA sticker on the bottom of your laptop (or maybe under the battery cover) you can use this to reinstall and re activate windows
Copies of windows 7 installers are readily available on the internet, heres a link to a guide to download, install and setup a perfect operating system
