Hi again,
I have a question how to update BIOS on Win7 x64 ultimate. I downloaded newest version of BIOS for my laptop (Toshiba Tecra A8-185 PTA83E). After unzipping there is only .exe file. When I try to run that file it says, that my OS is unsupported. When I run it in compability mode (with Vista or XP) it starts upgrading, but gives me an error: " BIOS upgrade is failure (8). BIOS is not able on that configuration." What should I do? I really need new BIOS. Can I run it during boot from USB drive or whatsoever?

You shouldn't attempt to reflash the BIOS from within Windows... it's a process that will either prove impossible, or at best unsafe (hardware dependant) - what you need to do is whack the BIN file onto a USB stick (best to use a sub 2Gb stick) and load it during boot up according to Toshibas instructions for your machine.

i've read that. But exe gives me an error and they write only about exe running. What do you guys think aboust installing Win XP, launching exe Bios update and installing Win7 again?

I believe that the Toshiba BIOS exe files, when executed, give you the option of creating a bootable CD. So, I recommend installing the new Microsoft Virtual PC, then download and install the XP virtual disc. Once you do that, try to run the exe inside the virtual XP and see if you can create a CD.

i have an acer laptop and the same problem , i was trying with virtual machine with virtual xp but i dosen"t work. i think the only way is to install to different partition windows xp , to boot from xp to flash the bios and after that to erase the partition and anfter that to boot from windows 7. it cost a lot of time but i think is the only way and the safer one
p.s. i also have the phoenix bios and i don"t like it ,it is a tricky one with fewer settings

Exactly why do you need to flash the BIOS? It can be done, but the standard advice is to NOT do it unless you have an over-riding reason to believe it will solve your issues.

What issues are you having and why do you think a BIOS flash will help?

BIOS flashing is not part of normal maintenance like maintaining antivirus, defragging, etc.
