BIOS Update

The Windows BIOS update is as simple as installing a driver.

Nobody said it was hard. Dumping a glass of ice water on a fired up motherboard is easy too. But the results...not so good.

And yes, you are correct, noboday said it was hard. I merely made a counterpoint to something that's being presented, and backed it up with links.

I totally agree. However, some who are less knowlegable than others can most certainly benefit from more experienced users.

I don't think I need to provide a link to proove that flashing a BIOS is risky. That's computer science 101. I'm of the strong opinion that flashing a BIOS should only be done when it's absolutely necessary. I probably won't be changing that opinion any time soon either. Sorry.

I don't want to argue about it though. Your opinion is just as valid as mine.

To set the record straight, I do agree, and preach, that messing with a BIOS is dangerous. I don't take these things lightly, however were talking about a BIOS update which the OP obviously tried, so that says he's comfortable with doing so. In that case why not help him resolve the issue of why he can't get the update to work.

I don't know how his post turned from I can't get my BIOS updated to a debate on why you should/shouldn't update a BIOS.

I am trying to upgrade the BIOS on PC to BIOS Update [TS94610J.86A]

When I run it, however, it says it cannot proceed due to a programming or internal error.

Any suggestions?

These things happen from time to time. I don't believe any of us intended on hijacking the thread. We just wanted to voice our opinions about the procedure, which some obviously take very seriously, and only want to help. However, I personally cannot partake in helping someone to flash a BIOS unless it's the absolute last option. If something would happen to go wrong it would eat away at my conscience. I try to give advice like the PC under discussion is my own.

after update bios(last build,asus website),i got 3 beeps and one message:cpu qfan error,and restart.not everytime.so,what is wrong?
mb:asus p5ql se
cpu:intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz
ram:4.0 gb
windows 7 x64 home premium

I'll go along with that. As long as the user knows the risk involved right up front. For example, if your willing to risk corrupting your BIOS with an update to get the maximum overclocking ability, then go for it. To each his/her own.

I agree fully with this, i do it mainly for over clocking, and sometimes for faster startup times, or anything else it may help with. tho my mobo does have 4 fail safes, 2 backups of the original on the cd and the disk drive, and a backup hard coded/ unchangeable original bios. if the bios has any problem, old tech gigabyte cooked up in 2001, but kept modifying until now. heres how it works ( back then XD) i think its the same now just they added 2 more steps, the cd and hard drive step

The mobo has to be setup for it, see the 2 "BIOS" chips in the snip.

Over at Vista Forums a couple years ago we tried to help someone that a "bad flash" had disabled his server board, it had to be replaced.

Maybe not so good... but VERY interesting to witness.

I once got called out to fix a machine at a local plant. The computer was a console style sitting in a bracket under a desk... where they had just spilled nearly a pint of Ferric Chloride... the stuff went down the front of the desk, under the edge, got on top of the computer, dripped in through a vent and disolved part of the heatsink...

Their complaint? "Funny smell coming from computer".

OT... BIOS flashes may be easy, but I would still hold them for the last resort in fixing a given problem. Windows "automatic updates" have created an "I always need the newest____" attitude that flies right in the face of all common sense. Extending this same mindset to crucial parts of the system makes even less sense.

Plainly... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
