Hey everyone,

I just finished playing through BioShock Infinite and I enjoyed it so much I decided to write a quick review for anyone who may be interested. Please note that I played BioShock 1 when it was originally released but did not play BioShock 2 because it seemed more like a BioShock 1.5 than a truly second game. Also you don't need to play BioShock 1 or 2 in order to understand the story of BioShock Infinite, but they do reference them in a couple of parts, so it is recommend to play them.

So first off are the visuals. The game is graphically beautiful and keeps to the slight cartoony look and feel of the other BioShocks. The architecture and landscapes are amazing and really suck you into the game. The charter models and costumes are absolutely brilliant. The look of your enemies is constantly changing, depending on what section you are in, so it always feels like you are engaging different enemies throughout the game. With that being said the textures on the grass and plants are horrible. It really looks like they forgot all about the foliage and decided to throw it in last minute. You are mostly in urban environments so you don't get to see to many plants but it is still noticeable.

The gameplay is just like the first one and is very engaging. It seems like the game was really designed to be played on a mouse and keyboard but I did have to move a few keys around because they were in odd places. The fighting involves using firearms, melee attacks and Vigors (powers) to dispatch your enemies. There are plenty of guns to choose from and you can only equip two at any given time which means you are constantly looking for the right weapon for the job and it keeps you on your toes. You can use money to buy weapon upgrades (more damage, less recoil, larger magazine etc.) which really makes a difference. Although when a weapon was upgraded in the original game the gun would visually change in some way or another, but in BioShock Infinite the guns never visually change which was really depressing. You also have plenty of Vigors (which can be upgraded as well) to choose from which can make killing enemies much easier and just makes combat fun and interesting. The problem I ran into though was that at times there were just to many Vigors to choose from and I would end up dispatching my foes by shooting them because I just didn't want to fiddle with choosing a bunch of Vigors.

The AI in the game was superb. Enemies typically fight smart and use cover to avoid damage. They will also advance and try and flank you if they are strong in numbers. There are also many types of enemies that fight in different ways so you are forced to keep your head on a swivel in combat. The ally AI is probably some of the best I have seen in a game. Your female companion never gets in the way and never feels like a burden. She is invincible in combat and is always throwing you more ammo or health packs which really makes a difference. She can also pull things into the battlefield to help you get the drop on your enemies, weather it be turrets or more cover for protection.

The story was absolutely amazing and is exactly what I expected from a BioShock game. It constantly sucked you in and made you want play more just to figure out the story. The voice acting was done very well and you really felt connected to your character and your companion. It was really confusing at parts so you really have to pay attention and have no distractions while playing. I played on the Normal difficulty which is the second out of three difficulties and it took me about 12-13 hours to beat, so it is a nice length. There is no multiplayer but that was expected.

All in all I would give it a 8.5-9/10. I honestly went into the game not expecting very much because I am not a big fan of sequels, but the game really turned around my point of view. I think this game is a must have for everyone, weather or not you played the original ones. With that being said, since it is strictly single player it isn't a must have right away. It will always be there and it might be better to buy on sale for the ones who are on the fence about purchasing the game.

I hope you enjoyed this quick review and found it helpful, let me know if you have any questions.

-JackALope

I couldn't hack fighting the Boss on the first one and I felt it was way to linear for my taste, add that the SciFy-e look of it and I ended up giving up after a 1 or 2 levels but I gotta admit... I really enjoyed your review! Top notch!

Thanks AstaLaVista. That's much appreciated. But I do agree with you, they are both fairly linear games. I just think the fact that there are so many side areas to go looting in you just forgot about how you have been following one path the whole game.

Thanks Dude. As I kind of mentioned before. If you have the money then get it. If not, don't sweat it and wait until you find it on sale because it will always be there.

Great review, I'm looking at buying the game too, I've played BioShock, and was going to buy BioShock 2, but do you think it's worth it?

Thanks BlueRobot. Honestly I don't think it's worth it. Like I mentioned before I never played BioShock 2 and it didn't make a difference. BioShock Infinite is more of a stand alone game.

Thanks, I understand that BioShock: Infinite was more of a separate game.

Hey just now saw this review. Thanks.

I'm a huge Bioshock 1 fan. Bioshock 2 was OK and I liked it, but is was definitely no Bioshock 1. That said I've heard great things about Bioshock Infinite and if I wasn't still in school I would have had it on release day.

Anyway reading your review it'll be one of the first games I get when I get my school break.

BTW how's the music? The one thing I loved about both games is the music, especially the first game.

Thanks.

Hey sygnus21. That's actually a really good question, I didn't even realize how much of a roll the music played in the games. With that being said the music in BioShock Infinite was great but honestly not as good as the first one. But it still does a great job with pulling you into the time period and gives you that slight creepy feeling. There are also plenty of record players littered across the map for you to play with so you won't be disappointed.

IMHO, while not as good as the Original I enjoyed Bioshock 2 quite a bit.
Yes, its worth playing and I would even say its a good buy at $20.

Do you use Steam?
If so, Summer sale is coming up soon. Bioshock and Bioshock 2 are often up on sale for $4.99 each. And at that price, its a must have.

Bioshock 2 - Steam - $19.99

As Wishmaster said though, it will most likely go on sale this summer for $4.99. I got my copy during last year's summer sale. Absolutely worth it.

Sorry I thought she was talking about Bioshock Infinite. I just checked Steam and it's still $59.99. I would still get it if I wasn't in school at the moment, but if it was 19 on sale, I'd get it now and play it later.

Nice review JackALope52x :)

http://www.sevenforums.com/members/jackalope52x.htmlJust finished this the other day myself. Personally I thought it was very linear and rather boring until some of the very end scenes. Not the greatest choice of weapons and half of the Vigors were useless. Visually it was beautiful but another let down in game play for me.

I'm old skool and much prefer gameplay over fancy graphics. Obviously there as to be some aspect of decent graphics but Developers seem to think they can get away with just pimping up the looks of a game and people will be convinced. Sadly, I am not one of them.

Thanks taylorig! I agree with you there, I did find there were just too many Vigors and I never used half of them. Also I feel like they got lazy with the guns. As I mentioned before the guns never visually changed and the "Red" sides guns were the same look and feel as the "Blue" sides guns, so that was pretty disappointing for me. The also got lazy on the foliage textures, but honestly all these things didn't really affect the gameplay or the actually player experience so I didn't dock too many points for it. Maybe I was just being too nice with my rating. :D

Oh and for how linear the game was, this is my take on it. How many games these days are not linear? It is really hard to find a non pathway based game that is decent. I think they did a good job at putting enough side rooms for me too loot so I could get distracted and forget the fact that I have been following one path the whole game. But that's just me.

Yea. I have to agree with you on the point of side rooms etc for extra loot scavenging and like you said about how many other games these day's are linear.

I personally look out for and play open world games such as DayZ (ArmA II Mod). Extremely demanding game on one's system though

But anyway as i said before. Good Review on Bioshock Infinite and well thought out points. Appreciate your efforts as i am sure others will too :)
