Hi,

First, great site here loads of info.

Second, slight issue that is driving me slowly more insane.
The way I have my computer set up is that one partition is windows 7 and other other is where all my data is stored.
On the data partition I have a folder for downloads which is where everything I download from my browser that I want to keep goes.
When I need to download something (program, document etc) I always download straight to desktop so they can be used/sorted.
On my desktop I have a shortcut to that download folder. Now previously in XP I could just drag on there and it would copy it to the folder and I could delete the original. Now in Windows 7 when I do that it moves the files close to the the Downloads Shortcut on the desktop as well as copying it. Now this is more of an annoyance than a bug but I am never sure if i have copied it or just been a bit ham fisted with the mouse. Plus it moves icons around it which again is quite annoying.

If there is anyway round this please let me know, I have tried search but no one else seems to have mentioned the issue.

Any help welcomed :)

I have the same problem and the only way I could be sure that it was copied is to open the target folder before I drag the file into it, that way it wont move the folder icon I am dragging it to and I can see it in the target folder, this seems to usually only happens when the target folder is on a different partition. I think this is bug that only Microsoft can fix we and should probably send some feedback on it.

Hi,

You may want to have a look at this gadget for controlling this type of copy operation, It was suggested by a member here and I have found it quite effective.

It does a lot more than just copy but the basic functions may be helpful

The Magic Folder Version 2.0 is LIVE - Windows Live

Its also on the MS gadget gallery under "Magic Folder"

Hello chrisblakey and welcome to the SevenForums.

Since you want to move the file and not copy it, try holding down the Shift key while dragging the file to the Downloads folder Shortcut . This will directly move the file there, instead of copying it and leaving a copy on your desktop.
