Bitdefender Says Windows Defender is Better Than Nothing

Security firm Bitdefender recently conducted a study with Windows 8 and its built-in Windows Defender sotfware and discovered that they're able to defeat 85-percent of the 100 malware families used by most hackers in 2012. That's better than Windows 7's out-of-the-box security which reportedly only blocks 32-percent of the malware.

Quite true of course, but I wish that I had upgraded to BitDef 2012 at my last option, instead of going for another, cheaper IS (AVG). When this copy is up for renewal (very soon), I will go back to BitDef. It was much better IMO, AVG failed to catch 2x nasties on my machine. You get what you pay for, I guess.

Norton has been removed from my step-brother's Windows 8 machine, after multiple BSODs started to occur, after removing Norton and re-enabling Windows Defender in conjunction with Malwarebytes, everything seems to be running fine at the moment.

In my opinion, you don't need third-party programs, such as Norton and AVG, they seem to be heavy on the system's resources and cause issues; Windows Defender is a great program which shouldn't be under estimated.

They are correct imho. It's ok, but don't expect it to save you if you do stupid things. Avira did, all the times I tried infecting my "testing rig" with the most common attack vectors (laughably debatable sites, pirated software downloads) it catched and locked down the malware.
Bit defender is pretty good, but it's a bit too damn heavy on system resources for the average hardware I sell. Modern machines with more than 4 GB of ram won't really notice.

AV testing is debatable. You can look at 10 different tests & get 10 different results.

A couple things you can be certain of. ANYTHING is better then nothing at all when it comes to AV's. And nothing is 100%.

That's very true, I have MSE with Windows Firewall enabled, and three different on-demand scanners.

I recently starting using BitDefender and loving it's top notch security and features, I used NOD 32 before and although it's still an awesome AV, I feel like I wanted more from an Anti virus so I gave BD 2013 Anti virus 2013 plus a go since they were doing a Christmas special offer.
It works really well on my Windows 7 64 bit machine, but for some reason, it don't like my Windows 8 laptop. The action centre states that BitDefender is turned of even though everything is turned on in the program itself and up to date.
To be honest though, there is a reason why I don't have windows 8 on my main desktop machine Plus I still got half a year on NOD do I'm using that.
