Bitf a problem with Windows login

Well I have been an idiot and tidied up a laptop for a work colleague a while ago and gave her the admin rights. Now I told her her what the login password was and was an absolutely nitwit in not writing it down and she of course after leaving using the machine for a fair while has forgotten what that password is.

Now I have tried many possibles that I might have set it to and searched to tutorials and Google for a solution to finding out what the password was and apart from remembering making up one for her that would be easy for her to remember am now at the stage wondering what the heck I can do as a reinstall is a thoroughly hideous thought.

There is a guest account that takes you into the desktop but it is not what I want to have because I need to change a few things. So has anyone got any ideas on how I can get the password back or make a new one for her admin account?

Hey John,

You might see if you could use one of the options in the tutorial below to reset the password. Possibly option 4 or 5 in your case.

Ok Shawn thanks again - I will give it a go and see what happens as I didn't want to beak any rules as Jack said. If I can get it back then all well and good and if not I have the factory restore option.

Just can't believe I didn't write it down in the first place as I usually do in my job book, so it is my fault for the main part. I did tell her the password but L..... like most of my work colleagues not really confident with computers and don't have the money for techies.

Nar, resetting the password is fine. It's just revealing the password is where it gets a bit to gray and not allowed.

Ok Shawn have tried most of the options and all come back with an admin login window and I am suspecting HP have set something in place to block me doing anything.
No matter I shall factory restore as there is no data on the machine that she knows of (brother in laws old machine) and I cannot find any listed through a guest account.
I think I shall go that path and reinstall the CCleaner and simple stuff like that and as I am on wifi here will do that at my place where I can get some decent broadband download speed. It also keeps within the rules and that is more important to me really.

Tanks for the suggestions though and when I get a bit more proficient at some of that stuff I will try them out.

**A after thought that might help you in the future in your endeavor to help others.
A little program that is free.
Belarc.

It would give you a option to save the needed information of each computer you help with.
You could copy/paste to something like Word Pad needed information and anything you cared to add like passwords. You would not have to print the complete report because it can be quite long. Just the information of your choice.

Print that puppy out for your records and then delete the copy from the computer so nobody else could take a look.

Yep thanks Jack I will look at using that stuff from now on.
It was primarily my fault in not writing it down like I usually do out of habit and for times like this and didn't plus picking a hint that I thought was easy and would be easy for her at the time.

But in the end and after a couple of months time since doing the tidy up which was a job in itself both of us had forgotten the actual password even though I was positive I knew what it would have been.

I will get into that stuff you linked and get a bit more on board the ten brain cells that are left LOL!!

Anyhow all good for the old learning curve eh?

Because I only have 3 brain cells and they all don't work at the same time a pencil and paper plus a printer is a necessary.
