Bizarre: three computers won't W7 update, one will.

We have three laptops: a 3 year old W7 Home Premium HP i3, a similar Acer, and a brand new (Christmas) Lenovo i5 WinPro. None of the three will do Windows Security Update, neither automatically or manually. (KB3205394 is what is required.) After I download the correct file, the standalone installer looks forever, never finds anything, and wuauserv (the updater) won't allow itself to be accessed by task manager, so I force shutdown after 30 or 60 minutes. The two older laptops updated in November, but won't now.

I also have a custom i5 desktop system for audio recording, which has a Gigabyte motherboard and respectable parts throughout. It's a year old. I search for the same update (KB3205394) and download it, the installer installs the thing, the whole process taking a couple of minutes.

The only difference (besides the laptop-desktop thing) is that the desktop is connected to the router by a cable, while the laptops are wireless to the same router.

Now ain't that weird? Does that ring any bells? I'm completely at sea. If anyone has any suggestions, fire away.

Reboot

Download KB3172605
Install KB3172605
Reboot
Go to Services - Windows Update - Enable.

I've been doing the 'security-only' updates. Has anyone here any views on doing that vs. doing the monthly roll-ups?
