Black pixels make screen shut off

I've been watching some movies on my pc (with vlc media player) and I've noticed that whenever a majority (80+%) of the pixels on the screen go black in a dark scene the whole monitor seems to turn off, and immediately when the movie gets brighter the screen comes back on and acts normal...

Hello and welcome H4LO mate probably the place to start is the driver forthe GPU

Sapphire Technology Web Site

If you read the hotfix but you will see they have recently found someproblems in the graphic card driver section bit there is also the AMD driver set you should take a look at but like I said this is the obvious place to me to start at.

You might also see if your monitor is causing it -- Some LED LCD monitors adaptively adjust the brightness based on how bright or how dark the image actually appears on the screen and to compensate for light bleed. You might want to look for a setting for "Auto Brightness" or "Adaptive Brightness" and go back to manual controls.

Being that this is your first time on the forums, we would like to see your entire system specs, if you don't mind.

The monitor is a 2 month old ASUS VE-228 that's worked in this situation before, which is why I thought it was the Graphics card, i'm trying ICit2's advice...again, i've tried reinstalling AMD's catalyst software countless times before and when I reboot the control panel doesn't want to pop up and a window pops up saying that the command line for it has stopped working

The Hotfix solved my problem about the screen shutting off, but not the Catalyst Control Center
To be absolutely honest H4LO I went over to Nvidia because I had no end of problems with the Catalyst Centre. I think I had to uninstall it and reinstall it that many times I decided the Nvidia was worth a try and mate I would not go back.

Yes I love Nvidia's software side of things, but AMD's graphics hardware in my opinion is unbeatable

Oh here, I found something of interest:
ASCR (ASUS SMART CONTRAST RATIO) TECHNOLOGY
ASCR Technology automatically adjusts the luminance of the backlight for better displays according to the image contents, and improves the contrast ratio to 10,000,000:1 for more realistic depictions of night scenes during games or movies.

Have you tried checking the condition of your monitor cables?

I turned "ASCR" off, the monitor cables are brand new and are the ones that came with the monitor. Plus it worked before with the same setup, even with ASCR on

Hello H4LO341. One thing I have found is new doesn't always mean "good". When the screen goes on a dark scene are the monitors lights indicating power, still on?

What you need to do if you can, is connect this monitor to another PC, or even a laptop and test with the same video as causes the problem.

I also agree about the CCC, it causes more issues than being helpful. It's not really needed, w7 has plenty of built-in video controls.
