I just ran Microsoft update for the first time this morning. I have MS office 2007 Pro.

After it installed the 20 updates it asked to restart.
I did and now all I get is a black screen.

I tried booting in safe mode which worked, and did 3 different system restores from the 6th, 4th and 3rd of April and still get the black screen.

I also tried to run windows update in safe mode with networking but it will not run.

Any ideas?

I just fixed my issue. Tursn out it was an ID10T issue. Ms update decided to change my video settings and use my TV which I watch movies on as my main display and change my main display to extended then disconnect my 2nd display. Since the tv is in another room and off I had no idea lol. All I saw was my mouse pointer on my normal main display.

Same Issue

I am having the exact same issue. I am running windows 8 on a dell xps 8500. I had the blackscreen issue, and Dell is clueless as to what the problem is. They came and replaced the video card, to no avail, and now they want to replace the mother board. I don't think they have any clue what is actually causing the problem.

I put windows seven ultimate on a old hard drive, installed it on the dell, and after windows installed updates, the same black screen appeared.

I know my way around a computer a bit, but not sure what ID10T is. Can someone explain, or walk me through it?

Thanks for your time.

Hey I'm glad you got the ID10T thing, I laughed when I read it. My issue was my 3rd display. I use the AMD catalyst so I have 2 display presets my main which is a dual monitor setup and my 2nd which is my LED TV. The update had switched my setup to the TV as the main display so I couldn't see anything (its in another room and was off) but it was there the whole time. If you dont have a multi monitor setup and your desk top isnt on another screen and they changed your graphics card I would put the card in a different slot and see if maybe the slot on the mobo is bad.

Thanks for the reply joenaz2003,

Unfortunately, there is only one slot on the mobo. I should have looked a bit more into the quality of the product before I bought a Dell.

I seriously think the mobo is not the problem though. As soon as I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers for my gforce gt 640, windows loaded fine.

I found a set of Beta drivers that Nvidia put out to fix just this very problem, so I am hoping this works.

My internet connection is really slow though, so I'm just waiting for them to download.

If the fix works in windows 7, I'll reinstall Windows 8 and see if it works there too.

This problem was really hard to figure out, and Dell support is absolutely clueless.

If this ends up working, I'll post a link to the Beta drivers, so that anyone else having this issue can resolve it much quicker than I did.

I try to stay away from new drivers for a week or two after they get released, especially video drivers. Glad to here you found the answer. Dells customer service has gone to shit over the last few years. They used to make great machines though. I don't know if they still do I started building my own. It's cheaper and you get what you want.
