Black screen after Nvidia onboard chipset update

So here's the story.

I've been having a problem with my desktop computer where I can't boot anything other than windows. If I try to boot from DVD/USB/SD Card, "Windows is loading files" will show up, then I get a black screen hanging after that. I can't boot into safe mode or system repair either because the same thing happens.

After browsing around, I figured it could be a graphics problem, so I downloaded the correct driver update for my Nvidia onboard 9200 graphics. The screen went black halfway through.. I figured this would happen but would correct itself once it rebooted. Nope. Straight after the Windows loading screen, I hear the startup sounds but can't see anything. I can't even get into safe mode to roll back the driver because all I get is that dreaded black screen. I can however, put in my actual graphics card to be able to use the computer (which I'm doing right now), but I never like to leave it in permanently as my computer gets hot and makes the area I'm sitting really warm too (I have a low profile case).

Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance people :)

Edit: In case you need it, all my system specs are on my profile under the according tab.

Hi Dan Welcome to Seven Forums ... Since the problem seems to have started since you on-board Nvidia Driver update ..I suggest you go to the Acer website and download the Driver from there .. Then report back with any other problems which you may have

Thanks for the welcome, Maxie!

I've downloaded the driver from Acer. Will installing this overwrite the other driver that caused the problem?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Maxie.

This may be common knowledge, but how do I go about uninstalling the current driver? Of course the only one I see in device manager is the graphics card I currently have in, and I can't get into safe mode to check it out.

Thanks.

That's alright.

No worries, just realised I can uninstall the drivers from control panel. Will report back when everything is done.

Thanks for your help.

I've been having a problem with my desktop computer where I can't boot anything other than windows. If I try to boot from DVD/USB/SD Card

Windows 7 is booting properly according to your statement.
What else are you trying to boot using DVD/USB/SD CARD Example: Another operating system.
If your are trying to boot something from the DVD ect are you changing the boot order in Bios?

The drivers are still messing around. I'm gonna have a further tinker with them later.

Layback, I should've been a little more specific.. I've been trying to boot Windows 7 Installation ISO (from USB and DVD) and Acer eRecovery backup disks. I've messed with the boot priorities in BIOS too.

Does messing with boot priorities me you have set your DVD as first boot when trying to boot from a DVD?
Also do you have any other drives hooked up.
For some reason the bios is seeing the drive with Windows 7 as your first boot. I'm not familiar with your bios but in mine I have two places to change the order of booting.

Layback, that's exactly what I meant, and as far as I can see... there is only one place to change the boot priorities in my BIOS. I don't have any other drives hooked up. I take any USB storage out, and I only have 1 local drive.

Maxie, the ISO I downloaded was from DigitalRiverContent which I believe is an official MS download. Also, to address my other driver problem:

I uninstalled the problematic driver that I installed earlier, installed the older one from Acer and it still won't start up without my graphics card inside. Slowly becoming at a loss with this and wish I had a clue on what to do next. I'm not too bothered about not being able to boot anything (.ISO's etc) from CD/DVD/USB anymore. I just want to be able to use my computer with the intergrated graphics again.

Thanks to everybody for all your help.

Hi Dan ... I wonder was it a corrupt download ... The fact that it wont boot with the on-board Graphics ... Leaves me wondering if the on-board Graphics is dead .

I'm not sure whether the download was corrupt because the setup.exe launches fine from the desktop, and everything looks to be ok.

Could installing that driver earlier actually render the onboard graphics, dead? This is quite annoying if so.

When I install the Acer Nvidia driver, it only asks me if I would like to install the Nvidia SMU Driver and Nvidia Ethernet Driver. What is the SMU driver? I figured that the install wizard would also install something along the lines of "Nvidia GPU Driver" too? I'm still thinking my problem could lie here somewhere.

Hi Dan According to nVidia's documentation, the SMU driver is associated with the Coprocessor and should be installed. MediaShield is the storage suite and should be installed if you want to do RAID management from within Windows, from what I can tell....Can you please post me the Link from the Acer website ... So as I can have a look at there Drivers ... Will be in a better position then to tell you exactly what is needed

Hi mate.

Here's the link to the Nvidia chipset drivers that Acer have under my PC model: http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...=ASPIRE X3400&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=EMEA_27

I'm also taking Gary's suggestion from the last page and trying out the 314.xx drivers. Again, will let you know how I get on.

Edit: Ah, I can't install the 314.xx drivers from the .exe as it needs to be able to detect Nvidia hardware. No idea how to go about installing this driver with my current card in.
