Black Screen at boot up problem?

I realize this is a Windows 7 forum, but I am asking your help for my sons laptop.

Something has happened to his laptop. When he boots up, it goes to the Dell splash screen, but instead of going into windows, it goes to a black screen. He has tried rebooting, booting into safe mode, running diagnostics etc, (hard drive passes short test) to no avail. Any ideas on what he can do? This laptop has Windows XP Pro and has been fine until today.

Bill Hi and welcome

If you have the XP dvd you might be able to do a repair install. Can you boot from it?

Thought of that, but no XP cd.
