Blank desktop page.

Ok, I'm sure there's an answer somewhere on Google but I can't seem to phrase it right, so here goes:

When I minimize Chrome or bring up another program like iTunes, I get a blank desktop page with none of my icons on it. Can't left-click OR right-click on it, but the taskbar still works, and if I click Show Desktop, there are my icons again. BUT if I should change anything or open up a program, back to the blank desktop.

This isn't the end of the world but it's damned annoying. Please help!
