...opened through an application such as Chrome or Word. I can use Explorer just fine normally, unless I try to open up a file. Then I get this: http://imgur.com/Eg20N.jpg

Any ideas? Changing the theme doesn't seem to help.

That would seem to be an error in that particular program. Give a reinstall of the program a shot.

No go. And it does it in EVERY program that opens up Explorer. That means Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, GIMP, MS Word, Foobar2000, Sony Vegas, REAPER, etc. I can't reinstall ALL of them.

Any idea which file would control this? Explorer.exe, explorerframe.dll, shell32.dll?

Try changing the theme to a default Windows one to see if that affects it.

Solved!

Turns out that you don't want to replace the files in SysWOW64 when changing themes, only the files in system32. I did the "sfc /scannow" and only replaced the ExplorerFrame.dll in system32 and everything's working again.

Dang Windows directory confusion...

WOW64 is windows on windows x64 emulation layer - why change there in the first place?

Well because I don't have a dang clue what I'm doing, apparently.

See, as I was unaware of what "WOW" was, I just figured that since I'm installing 64-bit stuff, it should go in the system folder that's labeled with a "64". Call it "I haven't used Windows since 2007" logic.
