Have worked on a school machine - Lenovo ThinkCentre M55 Intel Pentium E2140 core @ 1.6GHz 1Gb RAM (DDR2 - not sure of the speed without reefing it out again) and XP Pro.

Now my problem is as always when fixing these sorts of machines is the ability to hook up to the net and not being able to I think it is probably due to the thing being formatted to an intra-net of some sort as I get a screen showing Broadcom working some PXE? system that doesn't work and it goes through a series of other screens to boot - 7 in all yep 7!

In the past I have just put in a D-Link adapter card and driver to hook up to the net but am loathe to do this with this one as it has got to go back and I don't want to do that in case I mess it up by doing that. I just need to update drivers etc as this machine was running VERY slowly and have got CC and Defraggler on it from a stick and that has made quite a difference and I think the drivers would add to the performance. I suppose I could load drivers from a stick but I cannot tell without the net if they are out of date or not.

Any ideas please - if there is no solution it doesn't matter just that it would have been nice to get it really up to speed.

i suppose the only thing to do is wait until it goes back and conduct your diagnostics while connected to the local intranet, not a lot you can do if the config is already set up.

Hi IC...

Apologize for the tardiness. :D

In the Bios or System Setup, if someone configured the PXE feature from the Integrated NIC and set it to ON (which can be Disabled), it allows the system to boot from the network during every boot. Anyway....If that computer is trying to boot from a LAN connection and looking for it but it fails to, because it's nowhere to be found.

Have you tried going to the BIOS setup and confirm that the first boot is set to the local hard drive?

Hope this helps and please give us an update.

Thanks 2xg no my friend I didn't want to muck around in the BIOS as I have to take it back as they use the machine for school work.

But I get the general gist of your post as the same thing happens at work (I work for the health dept) I was trying on my LAN here at home so that explains why I couldn't hook up to the net.

Still the machine is fixed and flying (compared to what it was) and I expect he will be pleased that at least it is going (wouldn't even power on let alone boot) and he can now use it. I have installed CC and Defraggler as the machine has never had those functions done - ti was absolutely cluttered with rubbish and the fragmentation was just unbelievable.

Anyway I have the same problem with another machine he gave me but I will message your re same.
Thanks for your time and patience - much appreciated:cool:

Careful on using Ccleaner, use it only to clean up cookies/temp files but not to fix registry bec. things can go wrong. It is a great little tool btw.

If you like doing PC maintenance, you might want to add Secunia PSI in your collections. It's a great free program.

You're Welcome.

Ok 2xg I'll try that Secunia again I did try it some time ago and I had problems with Kaspersky and was told that it was because I had Secunia on. But I do think it was coincidental as I couldn't for the life of me see why it would interfere with the ISS:confused:

As for the reg cleaner in CC I do use it and touch wood haven't had any probs with it but I do thoroughly check whatever it throws up and always make a backup of the results. But I will leave it alone if that is what you thin I should do unless it is missing dll's or unused files.
