Blu Ray Combo Drive

I found an offer for a new LG UH08LS10 drive for ~$85 shipped, after rebates which I'm considering. I know that the price is good, but I'm wondering how good that particular drive is? Currently, I don't have any Blu Ray disks, so it would only be of future use, and may not get tested in that fashion for a while.

I know that LG software is problematic, and since my PowerDVD 8 isn't Blu Ray enabled, I hope that whatever the drive includes works.

in any case you can get MPC HC, freeware, and works perfectly for BR.

I have an LG Blu-Ray combo drive with HighDef DVD that I use in my Studio XPS 435T-9000 and it came with Cyberlink 8 which downloaded a patch when the Blu-Ray was installed and it play Blu-Ray and HD DVD's splendidly using MS drivers. I have made 25Gb BD's and 50Gb BE's as well as 4-8 and 16x DVD disks w/o issue. When I purchased a Blu-Ray slotless drive for my Alienware M17x I was pleased to see it was bundled with Cyberlink 8 as well and it too downloaded the patch when I installed a Blu-Ray disk in the drive and plays w/o issue, sounds like a good buy.

You might want to consider going for a BD burner, the price has dropped considerably.

That is quite tempting. My hesitation is the vender, because I have never done business with them before. I tend to be very careful about who I do business with...the only exception is when I use eBay, because I consider it somewhat of a defense against certain abuses. I'll have to think about it.

EDIT: Something that I have been wondering about, is whether one can use a burner like this to make a Blu Ray data disk...like a backup, using something like Acronis TI 2010?

I don't see why it wouldn't I have Acronis and an LG burner with a 25Gb disk so I'll try it and let you know.

After doing some Googling, I'm not so sure that I want a burner yet. It appears that none of the Blu Ray media is Lightscribe capable, and may not be able to create data disks, according to this thread:

I am able to burn datadiscs on BR

I was able to create a data disk yesterday as well but you are correct I have not seen any BR disks that were Lightscribe capable as yet.

I don't suppose that data disk was with TI, was it? I'm not sure that it matters, because the fastest Blu Ray media appears to be only 4x, which would be a slow burn with a large file like a backup image.

I guess that you did that on Vista, since TI 10 isn't compatible with W7?
