Solved Blue Screen BCCode 124

I've had two blue screens this morning. I've run Memtest86 and no errors, although I still suspect memory. I have 16GB of GSkill Ripsaw memory installed. I have another system with a different motherboard but had the same model GSkill memory and I was having blue screens and no errors on memory test, I replaced the GSkill with some Corsair Vengeance and no more problems on that system.

This is a dual boot Win 7/Win 8 and I had a Win 8 blue screen yesterday WHEA error.


I have a .dmp file but it will not open.

I ran a memory test on the Video card memory and that did not show any errors, too.

I did change a parameter in the BIOS for memory, from the default settings, and I'll see if that makes any difference.

I just checked G Skill's web site and your ram listed in you specs is certified compatible with your Board. http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-14900cl9q-16gbxl

I'm not overclocking. I know the GSkill is compatible, one of the reasons I bought it. The GSkill (same memory) I had in the other system with similar problems was also listed by the motherboard vendor (ASUS) as being compatible. The memory passed both the Windows 7 memory test and the memtest86.

Jack, I could find little in the dump files. You had 2. The most recent one wouldn't open. I did open and run the first one with the same date, 7-26-14, but it really provided little info, but this is what I found.

That is supposedly Pace License Service I am really having a problem finding out exactly what it is from a site I trust. But, supposedly it is located in c:\program files (x86)\Common Files\PACE\Services\LicenseServices\LDSvc.exe and is an PACE Anti-Piracy software, and according to some sites it is a windows file. I have searched and have not found it on my computer.

I would run a disk check for all drives, including C:. I couldn't load the last dump as it had some error and I'm seeing a lot of recovered L0 Cache errors (CPU) in the log as well as the first dump. It's reporting a Cache error. I didn't spot any processor throttling that would indicate a heat problem so perhaps a disk is getting flaky.

I don't think the error was caused by the process. It just happened to be in memory at the time.

Thanks for looking into this.

The Pace, is "iLok" which is a USB key that holds registration keys for several of my recording studio applications. It is an anti-piracy method, rather than entering a product key. One plus for the iLok (which many hate) is that it is portable, you can run the program on several computers, just have the iLok USB key plugged into whichever PC you want to run the program on.

As I've had blue screens on both Win 7 and Win 8, the common items are the motherboard. memory and one conventional hard drive, that does not have any OS or programs on it, only "data" and Macrium backups. The OS drives are both SSD's, although separate SSD drives.

I'm still leaning toward memory. I changed the XMP from "Disabled" (BIOS Default) to Enabled (Profile 1, whatever that is). Since then, I haven't had any blue screens.

I looked at the BIOS.

With XMP Disabled, the "System Memory Multiplier" is 16.00, with XMP Profile 1 (or 2) the Multiplier is 18.67. In all cases it shows memory frequency as 1600Mhz.

I figured out what it basically was, but didn't know the details as you explained them. It sounds good as long as it does not cause problems. Carwiz may have been correct in that it was just in memory at the time of the crash and didn't have anything to do with the crash. Almost any memory should run and cause no problems at 1333 9-9-9-24-2T. That is usually what it is set for the first boot anyway.

So, after changing your memory, do you just want to wait and see what happens? We can start running hardware tests if you want, but they can be very time consuming. If you have another BSOD maybe it will point us in the right direction. I'm sure the firmware on your SSDs is up to date, if not I would check and make sure. Just tell us what you'd like to do. I'll help any way I can.

I'll give it a day or two and see what happens. If there are no more halts I'll assume it was the memory configuration.

It looks fine to me. The ram is running at specs for 1600, so maybe that will help.

Is there any writing to that USB key? How old is it? You might look into what it takes to get a replacement just in case

The image above is Slot#1. Do the others match? Data gets spread over all modules available. That's how dual/quad channel memory works. It never gets used end-to-end.

I'll stay subscribed and tag along. 0x124 hardware errors are always hard to pin down. I'm surprised memtest didn't say anything. The recovered cache errors have me on edge. Even though you don't get a dump, a fresh run of the utility and/or a look at the syslog might confirm you're not getting continued cache errors. Give it day or so and re-run the utility.

All 4 memory slots show the same in CPU-Z.

The USB "dongle" key for iLok is a proprietary and its a $49 charge for a new one plus a charge by Pace to move it to a new key. On recording forums, there is very little failure of the keys. There have been some that had problems with the Pace software, but I haven't had any issues (over the past 5 years that I've been using it).

Although I have a SSD and fast boot up times, it seems to be visibly faster since I changed the memory to XMP. I have some Corsair that I can try if needed (if I get another blue screen).

Update, I'm posting this from my dual boot Win 8.1.1 installation. Win 8 metro apps are zinging by much faster since I changed memory to XMP. Maybe that change was the answer? Again, I'll wait a couple of days to see if its settled down.

I was still getting an occasional WHEA error (not many but I did get two) showing up in the Windows system event logs.

I swapped the GSkill memory with Corsair Vengeance 1866Mhz memory CMY16GX3M2A1866C9R.

I haven't got a WHEA error since. However, I can't get my Gigabyte GAZ77X UD5H motherboard (with an i7 3770) memory speed up to the 1866.

In the BIOS I have
XMP Profile 1
System Memory Multiplier 18.67
Memory Frequency 1333 Mhz. The option for this parameter is grayed out (not accessable) but shows 1867Mhz

You could try, if your board allows it, to set it manually, with the frequency at 1866, timings of 9-10-9-27-2T and the voltage at 1.5V. But I'm not sure why the XMP would be greyed out. You ram clearly has an XMP profile.

The specs on that board would indicate 1866 is not an option. It jumps from 1600 in native mode to 2400 2800 if overclocked. Steve is the over clocker so I'll stand by. The Gigabyte specs include a number of steps in their memory compatibility chart so does this mean you have to turn off XMP and overclock the memory to get those steps?
