I know this is an old thread but I'll try posting anyway.

I am good until I click on Start in step 11 and then it goes to a blue screen with an error that says somethng like memory dump and it all just stops dead in it's tracks. I am using win 7 pro sp1 just bought a week ago on Sep 14, 2011 so it should be up to date. Does anyone have an idea why it would error out?

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.

* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.

* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I made the changes but the folder was empty. I tried to get through step 11 on setup again but the BSOD screen showed something different this time.

collecting data for crash dump...
initializing disk for crash dump...

That was it and the folder windows/minidump dissapeared and the new location went to

windows/microsoft.NET/minidump

with a padlock on it. It also says the folder is empty.

I haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling this yet. I have the downloaded file on my desktop so I won't have to download it again. Would you like me to do that and then try again?

I get the message that

"the update is not applicable to your computer"

when I run the Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg file for virtual pc installation.

There is no record on the control panel installed programs that this file was installed. Does this give any kind of indicaton of what might be wrong? Should the virtual pc part be shown as installed? If the two files are needed to run together it's no wonder that the xp part gives the BSOD.
