Solved bluray autoplay behavior

Hello all, So I have autoplay turned off(set to Take no action) for everything in Win7, yet when I pop a bluray movie in it starts up Power dvd and proceeds to play the movie. However if I put a regular dvd in nothing happens as it should. Why is the bluray autoplaying when I've set the system to take no action? Any suggestions?

Just check your autoplay settings again. I assume Power DVD simply overrides the autoplay options an activates by itself because it's set to be the default player to play blue-rays.

Click Start and type in Autoplay, choose it from the list of search results. When a new window opens, just uncheck the very first option "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" instead of going through each and choosing to take no action, because that means that AutoPlay is still always active on your system, even though set not to do anything. So just turn it off completely.

I already did that. I mentioned that in the first sentence of my post.

In that case, try the "reset to defaults button" and make sure you still keep the first option unchecked.

Well, the only other thing that comes to mind is to check the PowerDVD settings and see if there's anything in there that can help you. I wouldn't be surprised if PowerDVD just overrides autoplay options and does what it wants xD

Not anymore. I disabled it in the startup options, but didn't do it for this reason. I was just seeing if I had anything running at startup I didn't need to start up with Windows. Wow, that was the problem. Thanks. I just popped a bluray in a no autoplay.

That seems like a security issue wouldn't it? Is that a MS issue or Power DVD issue?

It doesn't seem like a security issue to me.
Popular software packages have tendencies to "take over" your OS, even the little things like autoplay when it comes to PowerDVD, ISO images when it comes to Nero, portable devices for iTunes, general playback with Real Player... It's nothing new, at least not to me. Having "too many" multimedia applications creates a mess with file associations if the particular software package isn't set up correctly and/or completely.

In your case, PowerDVD simply added a startup service that doesn't regularly show anywhere else but msconfig; it's the most powerful tool for integrating an app with the operating system and the way it behaves when it comes to user usage, and many software packages are doing it.

I only think of the security issue is with the warnings about autoplay. I know with Bluray there's currently not much software that is installed on a bluray format, but if some files or software is burned to bluray disc than it's still in the realm of possiblity that autoplay could load some sort of malware that came with the disc. Albeit unlikely currently.
