This problem has been frustrating me for several days now, and i'm in need of some help.

I'm attempting to dual boot Windows7x64 7100 with the Vistax64 i currently have installed on my Acer Aspire 5100. I have created a new simple volume partition of 16GB on my drive and have attempted to do a clean install on this drive using the Windows 7 iso DVD I made.

The files are all extracted, updates are installed and everything runs smoothly until after the system has restarted during the installation, launching Windows 7 where it attempts to "finalize" or "complete" installation. The progress bar gradually makes its way towards completion when all of a sudden it tells me that

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

I have read many forums offering advice on this error with no success for my problem. I have attempted the registry fix with PartMgr, which didn't need to be fixed in the first place and have also attempted installation with Norton Antivirus uninstalled. Each with no success. If anyone has any advice on how I can get this dual boot to work, it would be much appreciated.

This is a guess but I just did a fresh install today and after updating two drivers and installing Live Mail and Avast, I had used 17.2GB. I know the min. requirements but I would try a 25-30GB partition and see if that works. That's the easiest thing I can think may work. Good luck.

i retried the install with a 20GB partition with no luck, after the install fails i can boot back into vista and see in explorer that only 9GB of the windows 7 partition has been used and that the data is still there. any other advice would be much appreciated

lol I dunno. Update the boot configuration yourself then from Vista with EasyBCD. Simply add the 7 partition as a boot choice. Then reboot and see if you can get into 7 or if the install will now magically continue.

Windows 7 already appears in EasyBCD as a boot entry and I can see it as an option on the black screen when i startup my system... i'm just confused because i don't get why it would tell me that it's having trouble with boot configuration if it's already completely configured and boots fine. When i select windows 7 from the boot menu upon startup it attempts to complete the install and gives me the same error i posted above

sooo confusing

You could try copying your boot files to another drive, change bios to boot from the new drive and then try to boot into 7. There's tutorials around here to do that if you search.

Just an idea I had, but probably will not help you any. Sorry.

nah i don't think i'm going to go to that trouble, plus i really have no idea if that would fix the issue, i suspect it wouldn't really do anything

I've been having the exact same problem with my system and it doesn't seem to matter where I boot from, it fails exactly the same way and then completely fails to load Windows Vista afterward cause it keeps trying to load Windows 7 and fails. I'm going to attempt a complete OS replacement to see if that works to solve the problem, but it would be nice to know if there was another possible option.
