Hope some one can help me with this as im at a loss

This morning i booted up and got a blank screen with flashing cursor. That was it.Ran start up repair numerous time with no joy it just wouldnt boot.As a last resort i used PW bootable cd and changed the active partition from system reserved to my windows 7 partition and run the start up repair again and thank god it booted.

The problem i have now is im unsure about whats where. The windows partition is marked as active and the system reserved partition now has a drive letter.Tried to delete the system reserved partition but it said it was in use.Whys that if the boot files are now on my windows partition.Unsure about where to go next.

Any help with this is much appreciated

Thankyou

Danny(stressed grr)

First restart the PC to close any open files, then remove the SysResv drive letter in Windows disk management and then boot the Partition Wizard disk to do a wipe of just the SysResv partition, that will leave the SysResv as "Raw" space.

So the boot files are now on the windows partition then. Will give that a go.Presume i can then just extend the windows partition to collect the exta space with PW.
Just need this install to last a few more weeks till SP1 is released officially then will have a clean install i think. Having nothing but trouble at the moment

Thanks

Danny

Don't do anything except the wipe to the SysResv just yet, boot back to Windows after the wipe completes, it'll just take a few seconds to complete.

Ok wiped that with PW didnt extend windows partition. Couldnt boot again or access winre from f8. Ran start-up repair from dvd and got it to boot again. Now have the unallocated space at the front of the drive, But cannot access recovery from f8 again but not too bothered about that at the moment. Can i recover thet space now.

If you didn't delete the SysResv partition and just did the wipe that space should be "Raw" space and not "unallocated" space in Windows disk management; you may have other issues going on; besides you shouldn't have had to do startup repairs because the Windows 7 partition was "System Active" to start with after the wipe.

Yer sorry BFK it is raw space not unallocated.Im sure your right there is other things going on may have to grin and bear it untill i find the time for a clean install. Not even sure recovering from an image will solve things as im not sure how long the boot corruption has been going on.Dont like to point fingers but never had a problem untill i installed the sp1 leak.Maybee theres a lesson there somewhere

Thankyou for your help

Glad I could help mate, you can recover that space into the Windows partition using PW but it won't hurt anything if you don't and it may be good to leave well-enough alone for now eh.

To assure no boot sector corruption remains be sure to wipe the HD before clean reinstalling or reimaging. PW has it on the bootable CD Disk tab.

Greg

Is there any difference between wiping with PW and diskpart. It takes about 3 1/2 hours to wipe my 320gig hdd with diskpart is PW any quicker.

Thanks

Danny

Possibly, but not likely. About one hour per 320gb is normal.

You might want to run Surface Scan from PW Disk tab, then create one large partition for the purpose of Checking File System on PW rightclick menu.

If you have bad sectors you should advance to the HD maker's diagnostics/Repair extended CD scan, followed by Disk Check from the Win7 DVD Command Line.

It could be a disk problem which is why I showed you how to run a PW Surface Scan and check File System to find out if you have issues which might need more attention.

Ok after all that ive done a clean install overnight. All working well again. No disk errors found with PW Surface scan or chkdsk but still took over 3 hours to wipe the disk. Thanks to all that helped. Danny

Just because I'm curious, did you re-create the SysResv partition and mark it active for the install?
