Hello,

I'm having a problem with my OS drive going offline. Most of the time I'm not at the machine when this happens only to come back and have a black screen telling me of a boot disk failure, I power down then up and system boots up no problem.

This has been an intermittant problem for about on month now, initially I supposed it was a failing OS drive so I RMA it to OCZ and installed my clone and away it went, so I thought "yeah it's my old drive" but it's happening with the clone as well.

So tonight I was at the machine and it happens, computer sort of freezes while typing in Mozilla, cant close programs then boom she's gone and starts to reboot, gets to screen where the drives show and says can't detect port 00, then tells me boot disk failure, I have to power down then up and system boots.

Man what's with that?

Broken port on MB, dud sata cable, Windows? I wish I knew.

Can someone suggest anything?

Cheers, thanks for listening

James

I see nothing in your error logs to suggest the problem, although you do have a lot of genie-soft related errors, which could potentially be the problem since that software is backup related. If it were me, I would create a system image, and then http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html. If the clean install resolves the problem, then it is not hardware related. Install one piece of software at a time to determine which causes the hard disk to no longer be detected.

If you have the problem straight away with just Windows installed, it is a hardware problem.

Also, I assume you have checked all cables to make sure they are snug, connectors have no broken pins, etc.? Practice safe ESD habits doing so by shutting down, turning off the computer, unplugging the computer from the wall, holding down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and drain all power, and then making sure you are grounded when removing the case and checking inside.

Thanks for your help writhziden, I can go the reinstall route if I have to but with firstly stop Genie Timeline and check cables and slots.

I don't know how to interpret the dump files would you mind showing me the genie-soft errors?

Cheers

You're welcome. I edited my last post. I also added the sequence up to the crash. It may be due to the Volume Shadow Copy service, The Multimedia Class Scheduler service, or the Windows Error Reporting Service. Shadow copy would be part of the backup process.

thanks, I don't really understand what these things do but I have paused my back up program and will keep it that way for a day or so and see if that is the problem.

Cheers

Did pausing the backup program make the system stable, or did you proceed to SFC /SCANNOW?

Hello Writhziden,

Things went quiet for awhile, no crashes but then they started again, so I uninstalled GenieTimeline and all seemed well untill my OS started going missing again.

I noticed that a Marvel driver had some trouble before some crashes so I updated to the latest and all seems well so far except one of my WD drives went missing the other day.

I have run the Scannow 5 or so times and has come up clean. Might be MB?

Thanks for your interest

James
