Boot Manager error

I have a problem thaI am hoping someone has a solution to. I had previously installed Windows 7 RC on my computer. I then installed a SATA RAID PCI card and also installed a second HD. I attempted to install Vista on the second HD, but had problems and uninstalled it. When I try to boot up the boot up screen gives me the option of Windows 7 or setup. If I choose Windows 7, there is no problem. If I do not choose and the boot up continues in the setup mode I get an error message on the blue screen of death. The computer shuts the start up in order to preserve the computer. It instructs me to remove the PCI card and HD and reinstall them. I have done that. I undertand that the boot up files fromVista are still on the the HD in a hidden folder. How do I correct this situation? Can I re-install Vista on the second HD and achieve the desired result? I formatted the second HD after the blue screen, but should I use a drive scrubber and remove all traces? If you know or believe you have an answer, I hope to hear from you.

Hello PETERtheK, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums! Your questions are welcome here.

I can't be sure without additional info, but I suspect the only problem you have is an entry on your Windows 7 drive (the first one in you story) pointing to something that is no longer there, ie Vista. The solution is to remove the entry ... no more problem.

The Windows 7 tool for that is "BCDedit". Here is a tutorial for using it:

There are other "third party" utilities available to edit the boot code like EasyBCD.

I found Vistabootpro, or just BootPro now, very easy to use and well worth the small fee of $10.

Once you have removed the unwanted entry, you should no longer see the Windows boot manager. You should not need to do anything to the second hard drive. If you decide later to install another OS on it, that will overwrite whatever is there with what it needs ... no problems. Just continue to use the 7 hard drive as the boot drive setting in the motherboard bios.

Another possibility is to use this tutorial to update / overwrite the "boot code" with only the 7 OS. Just disconnect the second (Vista) hard drive, follow the tutorial, and reboot into Windows 7.

I recommend boot to Windows 7
1. start orb -> {type} msconfig {enter}
move to boot
click setup
move down to delete. entry.

close. Now the option will not be there...
