Solved Boot Manager Missing

Hi there. Today I was on my computer which has Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (x86) and I shut down, and there were like 25 updates installing during the shut down. After it finally shut down, I turned it back on like 7 or so hours later and I get to the Verifying DMI Pool Data stage, then it says the BOOTMGR is missing and press Crt + Alt + Del to restart. It's kinda ironic and lucky cuz just today I set up my back up on my external hard drive and made a system image. Though is there anyway to fix this problem? I've checked and made sure that my internal HDD is the primary device to boot from but it's still saying the Boot Manager is missing. What can I do? Do I need to do a system restore? And if so, what would be the best way to initiate that? Thank you.

If you have the 100mb partition - check it is marked active. If not, check the 7 partition is marked Active.

Boot the 7 dvd - when you get to the Install Now screen - don't click that - click where it says Repair my computer ( at the bottom of the screen).

Run startup repair. It may take 3 runs.

Otherwise , select system restore.

Did you create a repair disc? Or have someone create one for you.

I think I have one from when I had the RC version. And just my luck, I'm out of CDs right now.

You know, I think I may have marked my external HDD as active today when I was messing with my allocations and partitions (cuz I was formatting a partition I had which had RC on it and then merging it back to my main 1TB internal HD). I marked the external Toshiba HDD as active but I made sure my internal one was set to active too. Hmm.. and there was no way to un-activate the external one - or at least no way I could see.

I already downloaded a repair disk from there last time but it was the 32 bit. I got 64 now so I'll need to get my hands on a CD, download the 64 bit version and burn it on there. After that, what do I do exactly?

Alright, well I downloaded and burned the 64 bit recovery disk. Now what? I don't wanna put it in my computer and proceed blindly. Can someone give me some steps?

Boot it - Windows loads files - select language and keyboard, Next -when you get to screen that says INSTALL NOW - DON'T click that.

At the bottom of the same screen , click Repair my computer.

Go to command prompt, type;

Diskpart

lis vol

( find the letter for your external drive, e.g. Z - replace Z with the correct letter , in the commands below)

sel vol z

inact

exi.

Close command prompt.

Thank you. I booted it up and selected my keyboard. It then said it repaired/recovered something and to restart. So I did. When it restarted, didn't boot from the CD to see if it's been repaired. No luck. Still said boot manager is missing. So I restarted and booted from the CD again, selected my keyboard again, and now it says under Operating System "Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)" with a partition size of 953764 MB and located on C. I can either pick "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows." or "Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier." I should try the first one, right?

D is the system reserved partition - that is what should be marked Active.

In theory, startup repair should fix issues automatically - doesn't always.

try this:

Diskpart

sel vol d

act

exi

Okay, just did that. Should I restart now? And boot normally? Or from CD again?

Also, my External HDD isn't present in the cmd. I think maybe cuz it's attached by USB and is off right now, so yeah.

Turn your external HD on - check again - see if you boot up ok.

Turned on my external. Redid the diskpart, lis vol, picked G (my external HDD), set it to inactive. Restarted. And now it's loading up. Thanks so much.

Also, I'm checking my disk management right now. System reserve is set to active. C and D aren't. F is though. Is all that correct? The virtual CD is something stupid having to do with my External HDD. It's not a very user friendly thing. I lost all my backups cuz I used the Toshiba tools that came with it. Big mistake. Now I just use the Windows back up tools and all is well.
