Boot Options

Hey all.
Is there a way to have multiple logins that have different boot options? Like using msconfig to turn off start-up programs?

What I would like is a way to allow for both, my dev and gaming, to reside on one OS, but boot differently. So for my dev login my game updaters would be shut down and on my gaming login none of my dev programs would load.

Is this possible? Do I have to install two different versions of the OS? Right now I am using my VISTA install for dev and my WIN7 for gaming, but that means that I cannot test things under Win7 and as several of my programs are windows based this is something that I really need to test.

No, they removed hardware profiles.
Quite honestly, they aren't needed anymore.
It has been proven that performance gains are marginal at best when disabling services etc.

However, You can turn off indexing and superfetch services and gain a bit of performance on slower systems, but on fast systems, even this is marginal.

So, in short, if you are wanting to have two separate environments
then yes, you will need 2 different installs of the OS.

Thanks Tepid. That's pretty much what I figured. I just hate having to reboot the entire machine just to go from one to another. Oh well.

Have you searched here at sf? thre is an app called concurrent rdp. might be what you are looking for

Maybe run Windows 7 as your game machine and install a VM image for your dev work.

Ya, I have been doing the VM for a while now to test multiple OS or Browser. For general testing it is ok, but I use multiple monitors and the VM idea doesn't work to well that way. I know that sounds more like an excuse, but I have learned that when I am developing software to make sure I have everything just the way I want it, otherwise I spend more time trying to do small things than actually writing code.

Besides this gives me another excuse to pick up a 1TB SATA drive.
