I installed windows from a hard drive B.
Windows is installed on hard drive A.
When I restart the machine, if the disk B is not connected, the machine won't boot, it asks me to insert a bootable device.
switching bios boot order won't help, nor the system recovery tools.
I just don't get it, I made a fresh install of windows from an external drive, but it doesn't load if that external drive is plugged.
help :(

Is the partition you installed to marked active and bootable? Doesn't sound like it.

It sounds like all the boot management is on the external drive. I would physically check that the boot loader files are located on the internal. If the repair routine doesn't see anything there already it may not try to fix it. Usually when you add an MS operating system to a machine with one already on, the boot loading system is hosed and you have to modify it. I would look on some of the Linux sites since they tend to have more information about booting OS with multiple physical drives. MS still assumes you buy a PC with one main HD with the OS on it.

edit: this site should have the info you need. If it boots, they know all about it here:

You need to mark the win7 partition active, then do a startup repair.

1) Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management. Right-click the primary partition that you want to make active, and then click Mark Partition as Active.

2) Disconnect Disk B. Make your win7 disk the first boot device in the bios. Now run startup repair from your win7 dvd at least 3 times.
