Boot problems - boot sector messed up using TestDisk?

Hi All,

I have a Dell Laptop with Win 7.

I recently used TestDisk to try to recover a lost data partition (not my system partition) but when I rebooted the Dell system utilities partition booted (not Windows).

Some digging has revealed that Windows was on C:\ but is now on F:\.

I have tried a number of things to set things straight including:
  1. Boot Windows recovery CD and run "Startup Repair" Wizard - this made some changes but now the system just continually reboots without displaying anything after the BIOS screen
  2. bootrec.exe /FixMbr - completed successfully
  3. bootrec.exe /FixBoot - ERROR: "The volume does not contain a recognised file system."
  4. bootrec.exe /ScanOs - does not find any Windows installations
  5. bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd - does not find any Windows installations
  6. bootsect /nt60 all - completed successfully

Any further ideas or any diagnostic info I can provide to assist?

Thanks in advance!
Bob

Hi gregrocker,

Thanks for the quick response!

Following your advice I used diskpart to set the partition as active and then reran all of the bootrec.exe commands.

The system is now successfully booting.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear it Bob.

Those commands are all automated in Startup Repair which also checks many other parameters which might need correction.

Let us know if there are any further problems. If not you can mark thread Solved at top.
