Solved Boot time defrag

I hate to ask what to some might seem like a dumb question, but what is the difference between "defrag" and "boot time defrag"? Puran defrag offers these options.

Defrag is just a normal defrag of your hard drive
Boot time defrag, the defrag is done quickly during boot.

gogreen: There are several schools of thought on defragging and the latest is that the NTFS file system does not require as frequent defrags like the fat file system. Back in the days of FAT file system 16/32, it could really slow files access as your files were scattered all over your disk.

I personally use VOPT by GoldenBow systems when I feel the need to defrag as it is faster and I believe it is more versitile.

Don't get paranoid about defragging as once a week or once a month should suffice.

that program puran defrag seems to be versitile but I have no recommendation for or against.

The built in defrag in windows 7 is a bit slower but it will do the job.

Thanks, richc46 and richrockville. Good advice about defragging. I don't get crazy with it--as I used to! I defrag once in a while, and if the disk shows less than several percent fragmentation, I don't bother. If I recall correctly, Windows defrag recommends not defragging until fragmentation reaches 10%.

Rather than using time to determine when to defrag. The built in defragger lets you analyze. When it says 10% or more its time.

I would probably agree with that. Defrags are a rarity for me, never feel the gain is worth the effort.
