bootable USB not seen by BIOS

Hello,
Whereas it was possible for my computer to boot from a USB key until now (there is the BIOS option to make it choose USB device in priority on boot), it does not work anymore :
When I use a bootable USB, it goes directly on windows
When I use a brand new and not bootable USB I don't even have the black screen with "missing operating system" I used to have.

Does anyone can help me to have it back ??

Hi Yaroq,

It is certainly possible to have your computer boot from a USB key, however I've not heard of this as being a default boot option. On my system, and I would suspect many others, this feature is accessed by pressing a specific key (on mine, it is F12, but others may vary) during the POST. If this is what you have been trying and are no longer having any luck with, then it might be prudent to reset your BIOS to its defaults. This may be done by temporarily removing the motherboard battery (CR2032 button cell type), using the motherboard jumper or through the BIOS configuration itself (see motherboard manual). Note that if you do this, you will need to reenter the correct information in the BIOS if it isn't the default.

I think your mainboard supporting USB bootable drive, but maybe you have not correctly change the Boot Order in BIOS. Usually, you could directly click "Esc" key to select booting from USB device( when starting pc, watch for a message" press particular key enter SETUP" then you could directly press Esc

Hi Yaroq,

I am afraid there is something amiss in what you have stated or I am throughly mistaken.

"When I use a bootable USB, it goes directly on windows" - This can happen when your bootable USB pendrive is really not bootable. It will then boot into the next device in the boot priority and boot Windows if you already have installed Windows.

"When I use a brand new and not bootable USB I don't even have the black screen with "missing operating system" I used to have." - That could happen only when you hadn't installed Windows. When Windows is already installed it will skip the USB, boot into the next device and into Windows.

Now try your "bootable USB" pendrive on another PC and check whether it is really bootable.

And do tell us what exactly you are trying to do with the bootable pendrive, and how you created it so that we can look into any problem in the proper perspective.

Thank you for your answers.

Even when windows was installed I happenned to have the "missing OS" screen. But it's a detail.

I'm trying to install linux and made my USB key bootable with the lili USB creator software. Linux is not installed on my cpu right now.

and to make th story complete :
- first try with my USB key with a ISO image of ubuntu on it but not bootable (yeah I'm a noob) => missing OS
- second attempt : with USB made bootable with lili USB creator => works. I install ubuntu into windows.
- I restart the cpu at this point, wanting to begin again the ubuntu install cause I wanted to make a partition of my HD (which I didn t do at anytime) instead of installing into windows. So I reboot with the USB still plugged => directly on windows.
- So i tell myself go into the bios again to check the priority order => tapping F2 now brings me first not in the BIOS but in a multiboot options, with only windows as an option. and only just after exiting this can I re tape F2 quickly to enter the BIOS.

Ubuntu can t be found anywhere on my cpu, it does not seem installed, but since then I have the pb I told you.

Maybe there is something important in all those details I don t know, but thank you very much for your help !
