Hi,

I have a Lenovo machine with Windows Vista home basic version installed. I downloaded Windows 7 & made a bootable USB..After changing BIOS setting for boot, I tried to boot my machine through USB but failed...no error has been reported. it just hang in there for a while & then move to HDD for boot up.

I read many threads suggesting clean format but not sure how to do it since my bootable USB is not supporting at all.

Note: I had to download bootsect.exe separately as some X64 bit error was popping up while making a bootable USB.

Regards

Yaachit

I think the OP knows that, because he is trying to install by booting the usb.

You could try Vista Diskpart command to create and format the USB partition. Then copy the contents of the win7 iso onto it.

From an admin cmd prompt ( press enter after each command)

diskpart

lis dis

sel dis ? (replace ? with the disk number of your usb drive)

clean

cre par pri

act

for FS=ntfs LABEL="win7" QUICK.

Could be, but that would not be an upgrade then. It would be a clean install.

1) Are you able to boot Vista install media, or Vista recovery media from usb?

2) Do you even have Vista install/recovery media?

If you are trying to run bootsect from 32 bit installed windows, then you need 32 bit bootsect.exe

You can't run a 64 bit bootsect.exe from within 32 bit windows. That is why you need to use 32 bit bootsect.exe.

If you have done that and it is still not working, then the problem is not the lack of nt6 bootsector code.
