Booting Problem

I have 3 drives installed 2 SATA and one IDE

First SATA has the OS(Win7 Ultimate) installed, and the others have been wiped and just used for storage now.
Checked the bootup order in BIOS and the OS drive is selected for first boot.

The problem is when i turn the PC on it beeps once then gets to the Windows 'Lights-forming-flag' screen, then the pc goes no further and restarts itself, it then gets to a black screen where i can either select :-
Start Windows Normally' or Launch Startup repair.

If select Start normally it does so with no problems and if i select startup repair it says i have to use system restore which if i select it restores it and again all is fine.

So either way does work but obviously theres got to be some kinda problem that's stopping it starting up properly.

Has anyone got any ideas please?

So, just to clarify......if you use either method, Windows then starts up fine and you can use the PC normally. However, if you shut it down, and then restart again, you have to go through the same steps again?

Is that correct?

Yes that is correct, just to add that its only after a complete Shutdown, and NOT after a restart, restarting the pc is fine and loads up normally.

OK - the problems only happen when the power is tuned off.

Lets start by verifying the integrity of your system files:

1. Open an elevated command prompt by clicking Start Orb, and in the search box type cmd.
2. Right click on cmd, and choose Run as administrator
3. In the Command Prompt Window type sfc/ scannow

Let in run to completion, and then copy and paste the results back here.

Yes that is correct, just to add that its only after a complete Shutdown, and NOT after a restart, restarting the pc is fine and loads up normally.

Ive had a similar issue except that I got a black screen the cause of which was a loose conection to the graphic card.
Have you set the boot priority to the sata hdd on which the OS is installed? I'm not talking about the boot order. Just to be clear.

I have checked for loose connections but no harm in checking again.

Yes have set boot priority to that hdd, then i set the order of the boot to that one also.

Have you run the drive fitness test(s) from your hard drive manufacturers?

Judging by your system specs you ought to be alright power-wise, but if you have a good spare you might try that.

See if there is an option in your bios to set HDD Delay to a couple of seconds.

What I'm driving at with all of this is that from a dead stop the drive might not be spinning up fast enough to be ready to boot when it needs to be. When you restart, it is already spinning (and the computer works fine). This could be due to a failing drive, not quite enough power from the PSU, or some other event which is leaving the HD not quite ready to go when it needs to be during a cold boot sequence.

Ive run Western Digitals Diagnostics tests and a few other drive tests i googled for and all have come back saying he drives are fine.....................however i did make this thread a few weeks back and may shed a bit more light:-

However since that thread i have wiped the 2 drives and just using the one SATA with the OS installed.

After a bit of online searching is was suggested to me that my 'Cavier Green' Drives only spin at a rate of 5400rpm compared to a 'normal' drive of 7200rpm, so your spin drive theory could be telling?

I have also got another PSU on order as a past problem with my Graphics Card showed me i only have 18Amps on the 12+ rail and maybe under powering a few items so my new one is 40Amps.

Are your SATA drivers up to date? That's not going to fix the cold boot problem, but would be worth checking.

I think they are but how can i tell, as i think Windows downloaded and installed them for me, i dont remember ever getting them from the WD site for example?

You would either get them from Asus or from Intel. Are you using the Intel or the JMicron SATA from the motherboard?

The drivers there are old - I would look for something newer, if available.

Check where the drive is connected on the motherboard and you can figure out which driver you need. Personally, I would use the Intel controller and go for the Intel drivers:

It then says select Operating System but Windows 7 isnt listed.

So really not sure which driver i should be choosing?

I hunted around but couldn't find anything newer than the release date of Win 7, so you probably have the best driver available already. It would be worth it to make sure that the drive is actually hooked to the Intel controller and not the JMicron. My housemate has an ASUS P6T with the same dual-controller options (newer hardware versions) and her machine did MUCH better off the Intel controllers than on the JMicron.

I haven't read the rest of this thread, you are already getting excellent help, but I shall just explain this error. SFC has encountered a big corruption above its pay rate, which it cannot fix. Logs have been created up to this point, but to analyse the actual reason for the failure, a complete analysis of the CBS.log is required. There are many, many reasons for this error. My first bit of advice would be to re-run SFC. Sometimes with a few re-runs, you can push the percentage up and up, eventually reaching 100%. If we need to, I can also look at your CBS.log.

@profdlp As far as i know there connected to the Intel Controller, on the MB itself there's only 6-SATA ports to connect to and the image below is from Device Manager, showing Intel.

@niemiro I'm re-running it again now and will report back if the% gets any higher.

No joy im afraid, have run it several times now, and it doesnt go higher then 48%

@Dwarf I havent unplugged the other drives as yet, but will do so to check if problem is the same as when they are connected.

What i have noticed is that if i shut PC down and leave for say 5-10mins(which i just tried) it does boot up ok first time, it seems when its left for a longer period i.e overnight i get the booting trouble.
