My operating system is giving out, i am locking up regularly now, i feel i have too many things installed on a vary small drive to pinpoint the problem. i have been neeeding a second hard drive for a while now, i think its time.

The question is, how can i boot off of one hard drive, but install all my applications on the other, as if i where booting my OS off of a 30gb ssd, just big enough for the operating system, but actually installing things on my second hard drive.

i am NOT getting an ssd, unfortunately, i am not rady, that was just an analogy, hopfuly it got the point accross though. i donot believe this is a form of dual booting, which is what comes up when i search the issue.

your help is appreciated... i already know an ssd will benifit me more than another hdd, but i do not have enough room to support all my things, and am closing in on 50gb left on my hard drive.that being said, im looking at a 3 terabit hdd at 7200rpm.i wont be changing up to a new one for a LONG time

Just install the operating system as usual, and when installing programs go into the advanced install options and change the location to where you install your program.

so there would be no way to have it automatically install on the second drive than

I don't believe so. You have to go into the advanced install options to point where you want to install the program.

It seems I've found a way, but you'd have to edit the registry.

im alright with that, ive done eneough of that already, ill just keep it to a minimum this next time so i can keep track of what ive done when a problem comes about.

thank you for looking into this for me, seems everywhere i found where someone actually asks the same question i have, they get some stupid answer from someone complaining about their purchase choices more than answering the question.

It's completely fine. I'm going to have 2 hard drive's soon as well so it may benefit as well.

What I found is this though. Read it carefully and all of it if you have 64 bit.

well, 2/5 things still require me to state where i want to download the application, also it requiers you to manually changethe root directory of many windows applications like IE.

some, including me still think it may be worth it... im on the edge about it to be honest, its taken its toll on windows applications already... youl have to decide if its worth it or not for yourself once you try it, and be prepared to roll back windows
