bootmgr is missing

Hello, I have this problem with my Windows 7 computer as well. I run on the repair disc and follow the instructions, however, on Step 6 none of the options work. It always says that it doesn't detect the system that I'm trying to repair.

I'm not able to start Windows 7 or boot to safe mode. If I try reaching the system recovery options screen without the disc by holding F8, that doesn't come up either, it just goes to the screen saying bootmgr is missing.

Hello iammeiamme, welcome to Seven Forums!

As soon as you hit the PC power button immediately start tapping the k/b space bar and don't stop, that should force the Windows boot manager and there you should be able to select the F8 option and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

I tried doing that, hitting the space bar repeatedly, but it still goes straight to the bootmgr is missing page.

Can i jump on in on this thread with a question regarding boot manager?

I have 3 HDD's and the boot manager is on the wrong drive (secondary) how if possible can i move it to the Main drive (primary)
A question to iammeiamme did you move ,change drives or boot priority order? as i know this affects the possibility of booting giving the same error message!

Try pressing the one-time boot menu F key, & boot the DVD drive.

Ripbox and theog I don't understand what you are telling me, but I've already tried running the disc and not that I know of to ripbox's question, though I wouldn't know if I did.

Do you see this screen?

If NO,
Try pressing the one-time boot menu F key, & boot the DVD drive.

IammeIamMe try these:

If you are successfully booting the Repair CD and it finds no installation to repair, click through to Options List to select the Command Prompt and type:

Bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

If these don't start Win7, boot back into the Repair CD to see if an installation is now shown to Repair, accept any offered repair, then if Win7 doesn't start boot back in to Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

Next check which partiition is marked Active from Command line using Diskpart to "Detail partition": Partition - Mark as Active (Method Two)

It's easier to do this using a GUI (picture) of Disk Management by booting free Partition Wizard bootable CD. You want to mark Active the 100mb System Reserved partition as first choice, or if you don't have it the Win7 partition itself. On some factory OEM installs the Recovery or another partition may be marked Active. After confirming which partition is marked Active, click on the HD to highlight it, from PW CD Disk tab select Rebuild MBR which may preclude the need to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times. If not, run the Repairs from Repair CD.

If the existing marked Active or 100mb System Reserved partition when marked Active will not start after Rebuild MBR and/or 3 Startup Repairs, change the Active flag to Win7 partition itself and repeat the Rebuild/Repairs.

You've now done all you can to start Win7, so if it still won't start copy out your files using the Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Then run full Factory Recovery from it's partition or Recovery DIsks which came with PC or you have made, or clean reinstall using a Win7 installation DVD with Product Key on COA sticker following these steps: Reinstalling Windows 7

Yes, I've seen and done that and booted the disc.

Which steps have you done exactly?

Reply back with result from each step given.

@gregrocker

Sorry, that post was directed at theog.

The steps and their responses:

Bootrec /fixmbr
The operation completed successfully.

Bootrec /fixboot
The volume does not contain a recognized file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not currupted

Bootrec /rebuildbcd
Scanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 0
The operation completed successfully.

This did not get windows to start and no installation was shown.

I ran startup repair three times and every time it told me the same thing:

Startup Repair cannot fix this problem automatically.

Under "View Problem Details" it said:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: Startup Repair Offline
Problem Signature 01: (there is a number here and I'm not sure what it means)
Problem Signature 02: (same number)
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: -1
Problem Signature 05: External Media
Problem Signature 06: 1
Problem Signature 07: MissingBootManager
OS Version: (different number)
Locale ID: (number)

On diagnosis and repair details it says:

Startup Repair diagnosis and repair log

Windows directory =
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1

Test Performed:

Completed

Rootcause found:
Boot manager is missing or corrupt

Repair action: File repair

This did not get windows to start either.

The rest of your post is, unfortunately, gibberish to me.

Instead of replying that the steps I've typed out are "gibberish" when the same steps have been used by thousands successfully before, why not ask specific questions so you can complete each step?

I simply mean that what you are saying makes no sense to me. I'm not the most computer literate person.
