I bought a second Compaq CQ57-339 with a wiped hard drive. I bought the original operating system and installed (?) it on the computer, but all the computer screen will say is "BOOTMGR is missing". Can anyone help me?

Can I copy the BOOTMGR from my other Compaq CQ57 and install it on the second computer?

Is there a website where I can get the BOOTMGR?

Thank you for any help.

Hi okwrangler2003, welcome to the Forum.

If you have the installation DVD for Windows, you should run it & select Start Up Repair. This Forum tutorial should help you with that.

Well , you just installed windows, that message means it`s not finding it, check to see if the hard drive plugs have somehow come loose, and make sure it shows up in the Bios.

How was the drive wiped ?

Did you use Diskpart ?

Dear AddRAM:

Thank you for replying.
I checked the hard drive plugs, they are tight.
I do not know how the hard drive was wiped. I bought it that way.
I do not know what Diskpart is.

Thank you again

Dear Ranger4:

Thank you for replying.
I ran the installation disc and nothing will come up on my screen except "BOOTMGR is missing". Can I get to the Start Up Repair some other way?

Thank you again.

Did you set the dvd drive as 1st to boot in the Bios ?

It sounds like it's skipping right over it.

You have a ? before the word "installed" in your 1st post, did you install windows or not ?

3 discs ???

You need to create your own W7 install DVD or USB stick, it sounds like whatever you are using isn`t working.

Using a 4GB usb stick would be the easiest way.

TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

Clean Install Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Free ISO Burner

In order to install Windows with a dvd, or in your case 3 discs (no idea what you mean by that) you have to see the words "Press any key to boot from dvd" if you don't see those words then you are not installing windows.

3 discs?

Yes, I called HP to have the operating system re-installed. This computer does not come with installation discs. HP said that I would have to contact Computer Surgeons for re-installation discs. I called them and paid for the discs. They sent me three discs labeled, Disc 1, Disc 2, and Supplemental Disc.

I will have the wife pick up an USB drive and try that.

Thank you, I know I am more trouble than I am worth, but I seem to get the worse of all problems. I really thought this would be easy - 1-Buy a computer, 2-Re-install operating system, 3-Job done. But that hasn't happened.

Disc1 should be bootable. If you have set bios to boot from dvd first, and it isn't working, there may be a fault with the dvd drive.

You can try using installation media on usb stick instead. You would need to boot from the usb drive.

OK, understood.

Is that 1st disc giving you the words "Press any key to boot from cd/dvd ?

And is it following up with instructions to insert disc 2 when needed ?

If you need to download the Windows 7 Iso file and create a usb stick installer, everything you need is in reply #8

Download the Windows 7 version you want and the proper bit, either 32 or 64 bit, From the Tech Bench link I posted.

Then use the Rufus program to put/burn the Iso file on the USB stick, you can't just copy the Iso file to the stick.

Any questions just ask :)
