I currently do not have my computer specs with me so I will try and explain the situation in full.

I heard about windows 7 a few weeks ago from a friend of mine who has it so... I decided to try it.

I have a portable hard drive 400gb which I stored the .ISO of windows 7 onto for the download of the system. At first it seemed as if the download went fine.... that is, until I restarted the computer, afterwards I got the "BOOTMGR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart"

MY situation is that I have no DVD of Windows 7 or Vista (It is currently with my older sister at her college), but just a copy of the Windows 7 disk on my Hard drive (Files are located at the root of the hard drive) SO what is there to do to fix this computer with just these files?

Make sure your portable hard drive is not plugged in, or change the boot order, it could be trying to boot from the portable drive first.

Since you have the ISO image of Windows 7 on the external hard drive, burn it to a blank DVD at 4x speed using ImgBurn.

Then reinstall Windows 7 and you should be okay.

If you need to download it again try one of these links:

@nibiru: i burnt a dvd with a different iso, about half the size. it doesnt work. what is the difference? now downloading the x64 iso from the site you mentioned above. is perhaps the other one just a repair disk? and this one a full installation disk, also usable to install w7 on (a different) computer running under vista?
see my own post about 'bootmgr is missing' posted 01.10.10, thanks

Check in BIOS setup to make sure HD is set to boot after CD/DVD drive, that there are no USB devices plugged in or disks in CD/DVD drive tray. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootcddvd.htm

If you still get this error, then download the repair console, burn to a CD or write to a bootable flash stick (using method posted below), boot from CD/Flash, select Repair, see if it finds an actual installation to fix, then click through to recovery tools list and run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times to see if it will start up.

Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files

@gregrocker: seems that i finally succeeded to repair the missing bootmgr.
however, please clarify a few things more if you (or others) can:
1.
why was often my recover dvd with the iso-image not recognized at all in my external dvd drive?
2.
why did i often get the message 'memory overflow error'? what does it mean?
3.
for the repair dvd i used the neosmart file you mentioned above - i already had it but first it seemed not to work, finally it did. but: what is the difference between that 1,65GB file and the 3GB digitalriver file that nibiru2008 suggested above - and that i am downloading now (30 hours, here in indonesia)? is neosmart a repair file and digitalriver a full installation file?

thanks for helping!
wim

It was likely having difficulty reading the CD, which could be the burn, the CD, or even the external disk drive.

You can try the CD in a few other machines to see how it runs. This would point the finger back at the external. You might need to clean its laser.

Yes the Neosmart ISO file is the repair console only.

@gregrocker: if i still may ask: the bigger digitalriver iso is what? or can't u give the answer.... ;)
