BOOTMGR is missing?

Hi,

I just finished installing W7 x64 7068. This PC already has XP on a different drive (not just different partition). The W7 drive is set to boot first in BIOS.

After the first reboot I got the "BOOTMGR is missing, ctrl+alt+del to restart" message. If I boot with the XP drive, there is an option for W7 and I can log on with that.

I used the startup repair tool on W7 DVD but it did not detect any problem. Tried easyBCD to reinstall the Vista bootloader but that didn't fix it either.

How can I fix this? And how should I install W7 so that each drive can boot on its own? I can select which drive to boot quickly after POST so I don't want the 2 OSes to tangle up like that

You will need to boot from the xp drive that is where the boot manager for all windows operating systems on your machine is located.

Well I played with it for a bit... Disabled the other drives in BIOS then repaired with W7 DVD. Now it finds the problem and fixes it.

Technically there was no problem until you disabled the other drives and 7 could not find the boot manager. When you install windows 7 it replaces the XP boot manager on your XP drive, that is what will be used to select which operating system you wish to boot. Disabling drives and installing a boot manager on each drive for each OS is not the norm.

I have vista install first in c drive, and installed win 7 on the e drive, when i tried to format the c drive and reboot to win 7, it come out that bootmgr.exe is missing.

Put in your 7 DVD (or USB key) and press F5,6,7,8 (always forget which one) and choose to repair the computer. This might take a few times but it should repair the lost bootmgr and you should be good to go

can you explain in detail how you did this... I have the same problem and with unplugging all other HDDs and repair-reboot-repair-reboot 5x I still get this:

and N: is not on the same HDD that C: is.
these files are found by cmd-> run as admin type "bcdedit"

Set your hidden and system files to visible (in explorer -> mapoptions)


Copy the bootmgr file from the N: drive to the C: drive manually.

Next in bcdedit

change "device partition=N:" to "device partition=C:"

That's it

New hdd new win 7 install missing boot manager

Ok , i have a hp 2 yr. Old comp with 6gigs ram brand new wd hdd 500 gig
(i do have other hdd's disk connected to system with vista and xp systems installed on them however i have the new wd installed via bios setings as primary hdd . Installed win 7 to new wd hdd and installed ok until i rebooted . (this is after removing install disk from dvd drive ) i get the missing boot manger message. Odd thing is i can put the win 7 install disk back in and reboot and win 7 operates normally.
Alsost like the cd's with games on them were you had to have the cd in drive to play the games.
Whats happening ? Does the install put the bootmanger file someplace other than drive "c" . And how does one rectify this problem?

I'm thinking of removing the other hard drives and install win 7 again with only the one wd hdd installed and see if that does the trick.
Also the new wd hdd that i originally installed to didn't have an operating suystem installed on it

Use EasyBCD 2.0 beta after doing quick registration to use beta. Add missing OS on Add/Remove tab.

change the bcd device partition

using bdcedit you get the bad partition where the boot loader is placed
use this command from th cmd opened as administrator

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device partition=C:

i am a newbie as far as computer hardware is concerned. after struggling for days to install windows 7 onto my new pc which came without and 0s installed,
specs are:

hp pavillion elite m9255.uk
amd phenom 9500 quad core
4gb ram
1tb hard drive ( comprised of 2 500gb hard drives)
note 1 of them i made a partition of 30gb where i installed the win 7 OS the rest of the 465 used as storage for my files.

the other 500gb i left untouced which on disk management is unused incase i do decide to dual boot a mac os on that one.

i was using my computer for almost 2 days installing all my files and softwares etc when suddenly it shut down on me and when i tried turning it on it said

Disk boot error please insert system disk and press enter

i tried changing the boot order in the BIos
open the cpu casing unplugging blowing and re plugging the cables to the hard drives in.
however on the bios both hard drives are listed and wen i check status says that they both okay

i tried booting using the installation disc trying start up repair no luck with that
went into command prompt option
tried typing in
diskpart (enter)
lis vol (enter)
it list the 465 which i use for storage but the 30gb where the 0s is installed dosent show. surely if the hard drive had a problem the 465gb wouldnt show as it an te 30gb makes up te 500gb?

i tried
selecting the 465 volume enter and then exiting diskpart
then it says

BOOT MGR IS MISSING PRESS CTRL +ALT+DEL TO RESTART

so basiclly i have read almost all forums concerning this and followed most of the steps listed above for however mine says boot manager missing or corrupt, wen ever i run start up repair its says

start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically.
sending more information can help microsoft create solutions.

please do help me out as i have seen that almost everyone you helped so fars problem has been solved.
