New to the forums, kind of a novice with computers and I'm at a loss with what to do.
Okay so my Acer Aspire 7551 running Windows 7 Premium Home 64bit was acting funny so I decided to do a system restore. So I put in the Acer Recovery Discs that I made when I first purchased the computer. Now I have used this discs before with no problems at all. So I put the first disc in, selected the option to do a complete system restore back to factory defaults. It's my understanding that this completely wipes the OS off the HDD. So the first disc ran with no problems. I put the second disc in and got an error message:
Fail to copy to HDD:
D:\Patch\Modules\WIncre.002\WOP000460OX0TCB111.SWM
Press OK to continue
I press OK to continue, and it boots back to the BIOS screen. Then it goes to a black screen and says BOOTMGR IS MISSING. PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO CONTINUE.
So I put the recovery disc back in to try the process over again and same thing happens.
Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated.
To start the recovery process:
1 Restart the system.
2 While the Acer logo is showing, press <Alt> + <F10> at the same time to
enter the recovery process.
3 Refer to the onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.
Important! This feature occupies 15 GB in a hidden partition on
your hard disk
Unfortunately when you use the disks instead of running Recovery from its partition, if it fails then you have no backup since the disks reimage the Recovery partition too. This is why we recommend running Factory Recovery from it's partition first so the disks act as backup only.
Did it prompt you from the first disk when to insert the second? This way you know for sure that it needs two disks for the Recovery and the second disk is not for drivers/apps.
If so I would try running it again after clearing the boot sector with Diskpart Clean Command, run from the Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk Command Line by accessing DISKPART At PC Startup. You can make a Win7 DVD from the Clean Reinstall link in my signature below - this is used for Repairs, rescue and Reinstall.
If the disks fail then your options are to order another set from Acer Tech Support or instead do a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 without the factory bloatware. Everything you need is in the blue link.
If it said "fail to copy" did you check the DVD disk integrity? It could be an unreadable issue as it's dirty or have some deep scratches on it.
The bootmgr could be placed on the last disk and kicked in as the last written file when all other files successfully written back to HDD.
The disc integrity seems to be fine. There are some slight scratches on it but it seems to be in better shape than the first disc which runs perfectly fine.
I've read your Acer Aspire generic manual. The troubleshooting section doesn't mention any of it. I believe you already familiar with the recovery section.
If the second disk is OK there shouldn't be a problem to recover your system as you previously did with it. (but visual inspection isn't much reliable I guess)
I'm out of technical assistance. But I may suggest you some logical thing you might want to try.
Check your BIOS, try revert it to default setting (just to make sure if any of it has changed accidentally)
Try copying your second disk to another blank disk, if it successfully done then the original is probably OK, but use the newly written as recovery disk.
If you have any bootable disk, try to delete all available partition and safe it as scratch disk for the recovery.
At least that what I can think of for now. But hope it will still help you.
When I get out of work today I'm going to attempt to make a copy of the second disc. If that doesn't work then I may have to consider replacing the hard drive.
Btw, replacing the HDD should stay as the last resort. Better find any bootable disk that contain HDD utility. Or you can consult the nearest ACER local support.
That's a good point. I don't think the HDD is the issue as the computer is reading and copying the first disc. I would imagine if the HDD is bad that it wouldn't even get that far?
Well. There is possibility for HDD breakdown. But we should wisely do things to confirm it.
There are many bootable CD/DVDs that have disk utility. Try to borrow from any friend.
Or as for simulation you can download window 7 ISO and burn it as installation disk. And run an installation, if it works then your HDD is fine. Then just overwrite it with your backup.
But surely it sounds like dumb advice and time consuming if compared to the need.
Doing a Clean Reinstall is not a compromise. It is a vastly superior install without the bloatware and useless factory utilties which have better versions built into Win7, and which throttle Win7 from being all that it can be. Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
Once you have it installed and set up, save a Win7 Backup image to use as a backup going forward.
After Microsoft announcement for win 10 and sharing it for free I thought I might turn back my original win 7, so I wanted to recover my computer by using three of my recovery disks and by doing so I had the problem you faced "Failed to copy HDD". (My laptop is Acer Aspire ...)
My solution to this issue is that first you need another bootable disk or usb just to delete all part of your hard drive. Be careful that you must not create any new partition (C: D: ). If you create a new partition it assigns approximately 100 Mb for recovery and when you attempt to use your recovery disks after, it only sees the recovery part which is not enough for your three recovery disks approximately 10 GB.
Edit: All right you can divide your hdd and create any number of parts (D: E: ...) but you must leave one last part of your hdd that you must not create a new part just leave it along. This is because your recovery will see there and assign (C: ) for it and install win7 there.
This is not an issue of scratched dvd or disordered HDD. I hope I gave a clear explanation for the issue as I am not native.
