Solved BootMgr Missing after Easus Repart of C - No Repair Tool is Working

Would this work?

If I were to install Windows fresh in the C drive... it should replace/repair the Boot Manager, right? And then if I ran Paragon recovery again from a rescue CD and tried putting that archived image back to the drive.... would that work?

Force boot to UEFI: Windows Boot Manager

How do I do that? When I boot normally (which should accomplish that) I get the Windows logo for one second, then black screen and then a text-based Windows Home 7 (recovered) DOS screen that keeps flipping off and on over and over.... in a loop.
But you told me before:
The operation completed but when I rebooted I got "Missing Boot Manager" error
But now you say Windows Home 7 (recovered) .... so no missing bootmanager at all!!

Is OS win7 (on C drive) with service pack 1? Is win7 install dvd with service pack 1?
Both x64 or both x86?

Most likely not! You did override whole disk already

But now you say Windows Home 7 (recovered) .... so no missing bootmanager at all!!

I get different errors depending on what process/utility I am trying to execute a successful boot from.

After Paragon did the recovery process to put back the archive image, the reboot ended in a black screen with "MISSING BOOT MANAGER".

Using Win OS/Repair CDs, it says the version is not compatible, even though it is the same version.

Pressing ESC key at boot to go into boot menu, and choosing the System Recovery, I got the text screen I referred to above as flipping over and over in a loop... "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.... etc... startup repair can help diagnose... etc" with an option to Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. If I launch the startup repair, it goes right back to this screen after a second...

...if I choose to Start Windows normally... now (at this second) I get this: Image codes: 1

... and I will check the cables but I really doubt that's it...

Is OS win7 (on C drive) with service pack 1? Is win7 install dvd with service pack 1? Both x64 or both x86?

They are both 64 bit and I don't know what SP she had but the repair disk iso I downloaded and used (in addition to the OS iso I DLd and used) was clearly stated by MS as being for all 64 bit systems.

I thought maybe Paragon did not make an archive of the bootmanager and that the fresh one (from a new installation) would stay... in Macrium you have a choice to replace the MBR or not when restoring, but Paragon doesn't seem to have that option from what I saw....

Like I say, I cannot remember offhand if her computer came with Home Prem SP1 or just Home Prem...she got it just 6mo ago. And the Home Prem 64 OS iso I downloaded... it was a link from MS and did not specify or differentiate... they had available only one Home Prem 64 bit OS so...

you told me you saw win7 boot logo for a split second. How did you do that?

When I chose the option to boot normally I saw the normal "Starting Windows" text where the logo usually appears above it, but instead within a second it goes to the black text screen in the image above.

And I opened the machine and the HD is buried. No way to get to it without taking everything apart but we know a cable isn't loose anyway... this started with Easus resizing C.

The Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit iso was the full retail version, which of course you need a product key to run, which she has on the side of the machine. I went to countless sites last night trying to fix this, so I am sorry but I don't recall the link. But it was a MS help forum I believe.

I know the Windows Repair disc came from MS... and they specifically said it contains all 7 OSs and the only thing you needed to do was to get the one for 32-bit systems, or for 64-bit systems.

Get the ISO from here Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Take the correct language and bitrate (x64 or x86)

I noticed on her machine the Win prod key sticker says "Genuine Windows 7 Home Prem OA" .. but I know it was 64-bit (I checked when she bought it and it had two Programs folders (...(x86) and Programs).

It does NOT say SP1 on the sticker... would it? If it as SP1?

And that link does not have Home Prem non-SP1.... or english iso's. :)

EDIT: WRONG... English is below... but still don't see iso for non-SP1...

EDIT: Wrong again.... found the RTM but this will take a couple hours to dl so won't be back until much later.

EDIT: Still not sure if RTM will work as "OA" version... I really think it is the OEM HP stuff messing this up, and nothing but an HP-proprietary MS disc will work. But I hope I am wrong.

Thanks so much for your help...

Update

Burned the iso and upon first boot the disc actually made it all the way to where it shows the installed OS and the radio button to repair windows! I couldn't believe it! I was so happy. Immediately a popup came up saying "C:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-20 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility..." Followed by many more popups of same…

...meanwhile behind this popup was another, and when I finally got to it, it was the standard screen that comes up to say it found errors in the Windows installation and asked if I wanted to fix them. I clicked YES and Details and said among other things it was fixing Boot Manager and System Volume…

After only a second or two it auto-rebooted. The reboot ended with the same old black text screen asking if I want to go into Windows Recovery or Boot Normally. And I got the same old results. (Win Rec would just disappear/reappear if I chose it, and Boot Normally ended in THIS.)

When I tried booting from the CD again, I got the error about it not being compatible…. after several tries it got as far as the keyboard screen again, so I used SHIFT F10 to get to a command prompt.

Ran chkdsk c: and it scrolled a million lines real fast that all said: File record segment [xxxx] is an orphan. So ran chkdsk c: /f and it deleted all the orphaned files and completed. Ran it again using the /b switch and it found no bad clusters or errors. Ran a final time using /f and it found no errors.

I had high hopes it might boot now, but no such luck. The hard disk LED flashes briefly with the MS Windows words at the bottom of screen, then it goes black and I get this again.

So I repeated what was suggested earlier, [boot from CD, shift F10, and] diskpart / select c / active … but got the same error as before about it not being a fixed MBR disk.

Also repeated volume checking for bootmgr and it found it in C but oddly it is no longer found in the HP_Recovery partition… only in C. (So maybe Windows Repair did do something when I was able to get into it that once and it said it was fixing the boot manager.)

I tried many more times to boot the CD and try the Repair hyperlink, but it tells me "this version is not compatible…" every time. I don't know why it worked the first time only.

I ran a DPS Self-test on the hard disk from inside the BIOS. It passed.

I checked the boot sequence again… it's still correct.

I tried booting into safe mode…. the files start scrolling down the monitor in text mode but shortly I get an error and it's back to the built-in Windows Recovery text screen that just disappears/reappears if I select to repair.

Seems like the error when trying to make the C drive active (i.e. "this is not a fixed MBR disk") is key... but I don't know how that got screwed up... even Easus re-sizing should not have caused that, and Paragon is supposed to support GPT... there is no reason it would have changed those kinds of parameters just using the default backup method.

PS

Seems from what I am reading (anecdotal, but for example this) MANY BU programs, especially from 6 months ago, did NOT handle UEFI/GPT disks well, despite them being 'supported'. Maybe the newest versions are better, but the free Paragon version from 6mo's ago obviously did not restore this archive correctly despite the fact it gave no errors either in creating the archive, or in restoring it.

In this case I think Easus resizing the C drive and getting interrupted corrupted the C drive... which led me to restoring the archive... but then the restore process made things worse by creating a completely different problem... the disk cannot be recognized properly by the system.

One thing I know... when this is all over I am setting her up with Acronis TI Home 2013, which apparently ACTUALLY works for UEFI/GPT.

In the meantime I need to salvage this. (But now it's my turn to sleep!)
