Hey All,

I have a crashed external hd that I've been trying to fix (comes up on devices, but cannot access it) and all morning I have been researching different ways to fix it. In doing so, I think I may have marked the wrong drive as active (I cannot recall what exactly it said) and when I went to restart my computer the Bootmgr missing screen came up. I know how to fix it, but I don't have the recovery CD any longer. I have a website where I can download the disk to fix the issue, however the only other computer I have access to is a MacBook. I'm not sure if any of you will know the answer, since this is a PC forum, but if I were to download the file onto a disk/USB using my MacBook, would the file work correctly? I have to pay for the file, so that's why I am hesitant before doing it. Would it be easier if I took it in to BestBuy? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

As long as the Mac has the capability to take a ISO file as input and create a bootable DVD or flash drive then it will work.

How about downloading the Windows 7 ISO then put it on a flash drive or DVD and let a friend with a Windows computer burn the DVD or freate a bootable flash drive for you?

Thank you both so much! I am still figuring out the mac, so I am not as computer savvy with this thing.

When I download the file onto the mac and change the format, if you will, I will still be able to use it with the PC, correct?

Also, since I'm here, I have another question. The file says I will be needing about 500 mib of space. If I have a 8gb thumb drive, will that be enough space? Please excuse me if that is a stupid question.

1024mb = 1gb, so it takes up about 1/2 a Gig, you have plenty of space :)

what do you mean by "change the format"

Not necessarily "change the format" because I'm not really changing anything. I guess I should have said "mac-compatible."

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start - ISO provided here with tool to burn to DVD, exact steps for confirming partition marked Active, running Startup Repairs if needed, everything else that can be done to start Win7.

Once it's started if Disk Check will not run on the external, install and run Partition Wizard Check File System and Partition Wizard Partition surface test.

PW CD can also be used to Mark Partition Active, however you need the installed version to Check File System.

would anyone, by chance, know how to burn the .iso file to a USB? i tried looking up solutions, however a lot of them have me using the terminal text box (which i'm assuming is like the cmd prompt) and I don't feel comfortable using it. if not, i will just use a cd. i just don't have one here right now.

On a Mac?

I think you need to use Boot Camp Assistant

Also, since I'm here, I have another question. The file says I will be needing about 500 mib of space. If I have a 8gb thumb drive, will that be enough space? Please excuse me if that is a stupid question.

500mb doesn't sound like windows install media, or winpe based repair cd. Could be a linux based iso for repairing windows?

Had you bothered to look at the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot - Windows 7 Help Forums you would have seen the tool for this in Step 11.

No need to be rude. I appreciate the help you've given, thank you.

Yeah, I have boot camp open, thanks! I'm not sure what it is...would that still fix the start up error if its linux? I don't want to have to go through all this trouble downloading the file if it's not going to work. (it's still downloading, my internet sucks)

This would all be easier on a Windows PC. Got any friends near by?
