i caught my 1 1/2 year pushing buttons on my main comp earlier today and now when i start it i get bootmgr missing error. I tried to put in a windows 7 repair disc but i got the same message. When i press del button during startup to enter bios nothing happens, i figured that somehow it is no longer booting from dvd first, but i cant get into bios to check. The comp is a dual boot with linux with win 7 as the default os if that matters. Also earlier in the day there was some lightning after which most electronics shut off. however my linux htpc still is working fine so i dont know. any help on what i should do?

windows 7 pro 32 bit
Start the pc and watch the screen, it will tell you which key to push to enter setup ( BIOS ) then you can set it to boot to the dvd first and do a startup repair, with your W7 disc. Hopefully you have one.

Try the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key to trigger DVD:
Asus - F8
HP/Compaq - Esc
Sony - F2
Acer - F12
Gateway - F10
eMachnes - F10
Toshiba - F12
Dell - F12
IBM/Lenovo - the blue Thinkvantage button

Run Startup Repair repeatedly. It should automate System Restore, if not run it manually from System Recovery Options. Then open a Command line to run SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

Report back for more steps. Win7 is harder to Repair and can in fact be irreparable with GRUB on the HD. You may need to copy out your files and run full Factory Recovery from partition or disks, or clean reinstall Win7.

Thanks Brink ;)

I have a bad feeling it was not the 1½ year old, but the lightening strike. If the suggestion does nothing, best scenarionis a possible reinstall. Worst is a hardware breakdown, hopefully only the hard disk.

Little late now, but if the youngster was the source of the problem, then I do recommend using the WIN + L key combo anytime you walk away from the computer.

WIN is the key with the wavy microsoft flag on top.

You need to be able to get into BIOS setup to see if HD is detected. It's unlikely the mobo is damaged if it is able to throw up the Bootmgr error which is generated from attempt to read the HD.

Are you tapping the hotkey firmly and repeatedly every second?

Try also the F8 key to see if the Repair console is there to run Startup Repair, although it is dependent upon possibly damaged or corrupt OS files to run from there.

If no WinRE on F8 try Last Known Good Config.

It is a homebuild and the the f8 woked for the asus keyboard. the default is the del button but that is not working. was able to boot to the repair disc and it couldn't find an os. Did the lightning fry my hdd or my motherboard? How can i tell? Or is it not finding the os because i dual boot with linux? I believe i was not using grub but the windows bootmgr. I set it up through bcd

I usually close the door but it must not have closed all the way and he pushed it open. He goes for the power button on the computer cause it glows though not the keyboard

when all is running again, you can change what occurs when you hit the power button.
WIN | Control Panel | Power Options | Choose what the power button does (in left-side column)

I like the hope in your post, I've been having such trouble with linux lately win7 was my safe zone. Thats a great idea though to change what those buttons do for when he breaks in there again

So I finally got into my bios by mashing the del key repeatedly and once in it looked like the motherboard had been reset so I reorganized the boot priority between my two hdds, one backup the other os, and then ran the repair disc and now all is well. Thanks a bunch for the help guys I guess it ended up being easier than I expected. Nice to have my safe zone back :D
