Though men are stereotyped as gadget hounds, information technology actually brings more happiness to women worldwide. A new study (PDF) from UK-based BCS—The Chartered Institute for IT analyzes 35,000 responses from the World Values Survey to make the case that IT actually makes people happier.

There are elements to that article that are correct, although:

The authors suggest that computers, cell phones, and the like do tremendous things for one's "sense of freedom" and control over life, which in turn promotes feelings of life satisfaction

However there is a cost to that 'freedom'. Increasing real life social interaction deficiencies for just one example.

the freedom comes from the fact that you also can call other people and aggrevate them whenever you want instead of at their best convenience. Now that is freedom my friend. you can also put your phone on silent to further aggrevate them and thats more freedom right there too.

This is quite interesting. I would think it's also age related.

I know lots of women contemporaries of mine (50s) who have broadband and use apps like Skype to keep in touch with their kids and also buy stuff from Tesco, Amazon etc.

Also I know a couple of women in their 70s who use the internet to do all the usual stuff plus research their family tree.

I work with some women in their 20s and some are very into pcs, verging on geekdom, but they are mainly the student types, well educated and seeing the computer as a necessary skill for their future's as well as social networking.
If you've just left University and moved across country it's a great way of maintaining those friendships you've made. I left uni 30 years ago and lost touch with most of my pals, especially US JYAs.

The less educated young women tend toward competitive smart phone stuff and use Facebook, Twitter etc constantly.

All in all it seems to make most women happy.
However I just read what I've written and you can substitute man for woman in every instant

Hmmn. Gaming perhaps, although I know a couple of young fantasy game females whereas most of the blokes play combat or driving games.

I suppose most old geeks like me (and a few others on here) are male.
That's life eh?
