broadband restricting download speed

Im currently using BT Total Broadband ,and i was just wondering during the

day they manage to restrict download speed using torrentz to a really slow

speed until midnight but download speed directly from the web always max

out the bandwidth consistantly..

This type of thing is not unique to BT or any one ISP - Known as traffic Shaping it relies on analysing the stream of data passing to your address from the internet and throttling the speed available to certain types of data - normally "peer to peer" traffic.

You may find some oblique reference to the practice in the small print of the contract but it is not likely to be prominently advertised

Some ISP's will actually use this information to throttle all traffic for high bandwidth users rather than simply the one traffic type

A quick google of "BT traffic shaping " produced a few results ( most of which were not suitable for even linking to here

Ive been following this issue on the Reg, and it has spread over here as well.. Most ISP's will publicly say they are in compliance with Net Neutrality, but in practice .... fortunately my ISP doesnt throttle traffic at all..

I think all the major UK ISP's shape to some degree - it's a case that to provide the advertised service at peak times they would need to greatly increase the infrastructure.

That costs so shaping is the answer for the ISP. As the users of P2P are pretty well demonised anyway, they are the perfect target

when information surfaces the stock answer is "we are doing our bit to stop the illegal file sharing", if this is the case then be up front about it.

It's the same as the perennial issue of UP-TO ....Mb connections, and BT advertising the UK's fastest wireless broadband connection because they're the only ISP to supply a "Draft N" wireless router.

I get a 9.5 Mb/sec connection on my 10 Mb/sec cable through my 54 Mb/sec g router and the same if I'm on 100 Mb/sec Ethernet - BT's 8Mb/sec in this area offers about 3.5 Mb/Sec - now who's fooling who

Would just like to add that BT is used for illustration purposes - others may be equally as bad

Gilly, check out Xilo, they are a lot better than BT and they have monthly contracts.

I have Virgin Media , they use traffic Management in the daytime you have to be very careful not to go over the limits or they penalize you for 5 hours with really slow snailband.
I could live with Traffic management but not the penalty if you stray over the limit.
I'm switching to BE broadband it has very good rep & no traffic management.

Hi there
the best way to get round the problem is to use a Proxy vpn -- then "Bovine Telecom" (BT) doesn't know you are using a torrent and the speed won't be restricted.

Bovine Telecom aren't the greatest in supplying a decent service either.

In any case once people start capping Bandwidth then it makes a total nonsense of the whole system -- what's the point of a super fast download facility if you can only download 25% of a movie without incurring severe penalties. Bad business model.

The major Italian ISP (Telecom Italia) is expected to adopt traffic shaping on their aDSL lines fron March 1st.
I would not really be against it, if it allowed me to always have a minimum guaranteed bandwidth but I don't like the way they simply refuse to explain anything about it.
I'd expect them to cut the bandwidth for some services (e.g. file sharing) only if they granted me with a minimum bandwidth (sometimes my internet is fast as lightning while sometimes is just slower than a snail), but still they do NOT talk about minimum granted bandwidth.
So what? Having more income by connecting more people to the same DSLAM and reducing their bandwidth to fit them all are we?

On a different note, I wonder how many people would un-subscribe for the service for this as they use it only for P2P. Well, maybe this would free some bandwidth for me to use then.

Bovine Telecomm (Or B.T) doesn't really understand or CARE about customer service.

If you HAVE to use BT then for decent torrent / other download speeds go via a Proxy VPN such as
Order now! | YourPrivateVPN

works fine -- also great for bypassing restricted media. I like the English Football Premiership commentaries on BBC R5 live but normally you can only get this when you are in the UK. Using the above Proxy works great WHEREVER you are.

Traffic monitoring on "Bovine Telecomm" (B.T) is bypassed since it only sees your proxy address and doesn't throttle the download either.
