 Does anyone have any information on this and is there any truth to the rumor that Broadwell E won't be supporting operating systems older than Windows 10? I've read a few articles and they're clear as mud about the subject. Will I even be able to use Windows 7 with the new X99 chipset that will be coming with the new Broadwell E 2011-3 platform? I mean Windows 10 is fine for those who like that sort of thing but personally I am averse to all the garbage I would have to disable (without any assurance it would stay disabled) and the whole "FREE" concept Windows Keylogger Edition offers its users. I have already tried Windows 10 and I don't like it one bit. I'm currently running Win 7 Ultimate and Win 8.1 in dual boot and I still have to say that I prefer Windows 7. What would be the point in forking out for all this new hardware only to discover I can't even run a decent o/s on it? Am I up a stump?

Well I did see mention that it will only support 10 and also that manufacturers like Asus will be making products only supporting 10.

I am not sure where I saw this but it seems to me to be the way things are going now.

My concern is that all others that came before will become so expensive or not available ie Ivy Bridge stuff that the systems we have now - quite adequate for what I and I suspect a lot of other folks use will become defunct as and when the parts become so scarce and the OS's not support them.

This raises a good question as a matter of fact - will the new gear support Linux systems??

Being an Asus fanboy I'm really starting to feel let down and I certainly feel for my comrades in the Ivy Bridge sector. I held off buying anything in those generations and stayed with my old Bloomfield i920 for the longest time before moving on to Haswell. The old X58 is still running true and fast but I'd like to pass this Sabertooth build on to the wife and get my work station up and running this year. The thing is Windows 10 on a work station strikes me as a bit of an oxymoron if not a recipe for disaster. It's almost as though both Intel and Microsoft are forcing me to go Linux and that, my friend, is a concern equal to the first -- if I may take the liberty to say so. I won't be asking for advice on Linux in a Windows 7 forum but it is starting to look like I'm running out of options. I plan on hanging onto Windows 7 'til the bitter end unless Microsoft encounters a miraculous brain transplant and develops another real o/s for a change.

Thanks Mike I wasn't sure but I have read that this will eventually happen with component makers:(

Yes, I read it too and they're being very wishy-washy about it... Almost as though they know if they told us the truth they'd be facing a lot of angry clientele. Intel was among the first to go public with it and frankly, I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase of a new E chip and motherboard if I can't run Windows 7 on it and still get support for it from both Microsoft and Intel. There have been some signs of back pedaling as far as Skylake is concerned but it's the X series that was designed for Work Stations so this isn't much consolation for those who want to keep using Windows 7 on the X99 platform. Perhaps even less consolation for those who want to use X99E.

Being an Asus fanboy I'm really starting to feel let down...

Let down is the extremely polite term for how I feel about Asus lately. The stunt that Intel and MS pulled with Skylake (requiring users that had already gotten their systems to upgrade to Win 10 to continue to receive full support) also has me nervous about Broadwell-e. Something else that has me upset with Asus is their X99-E WS/USB 3.1 MOBO was in production for only a short time and has apparently been discontinued but Asus doesn't have the decency to admit it. Getting their customer "service" to admit it has been impossible; either they give me an incredibly vague answer, essentially saying they don't know, or they just ignore me.

The only definition is what does "support" really mean :p

MS "walked back" only one year. Win 7 users will lose full support (and some features) late in 2018 now instead of 2017. What was so despicable about MS' and Intel's little move was many people had already bought Skylake systems well before this little bombshell was dropped (I'm surprised some "enterprising" lawyers haven't filed class actions suits over this). This isn't a hardware compatibility issue; it's just another way MS is trying to force people off Win 7 and onto Win 10.

Now all you have to do is define what support actually means
Win-7 is win-7 it will receive important updates till 2020 is the bottom line no matter which cpu it's on :)

Drivers from the manufacture seldom are released unless massive issues are reported and confirmed by them then they offer updated drivers.
I doubt that will change no matter which os is installed.

That is precisely how I see it too. I read about a couple weeks ago that the reason Intel wanted to drop support for all other MS operating systems (bar the Windows Key logger Edition) on the Skylake platform was because of the ancient architecture of those operating systems; but that wouldn't wash with Win 8.1. The real reason, in my opinion, is the push to Windows 10. Microsoft must really be feeling the market saturation. Why else would they want to give Zuckerberg competition as they evidently propose to do with their "free" Spyware Inc. excuse for an o/s? I'm wondering how much they offered Intel to cooperate. How sad. :(

Now I know that everything is possible (just about) what I don't get is how a processor for example can discriminate between different OS's?? If true and Intel and MS and Asus for that matter have colluded to monopolise the market and aren't there laws against that happening?

I did say somewhere else too what if one happens to want to use Linux based systems?? taking this at face value it is not going to happen. In my mind it is all a cynical exercise in megalomaniac money gathering MS now being Attila the Hun and the plebs lie us have got to wear whatever they throw at us.

It is very sad because for reasonably simple people like myself the Windows 7 and 8 with all it's faults work at a speed and efficiency that covers all my bases and I suspect a great number of other users. I think I saw somewhere that 10 was 25% faster than 7 and for the life of me when I tied 10 I could not discern any difference at all in fact the sheer convoluted nature of the beast left me wondering where that extra speed and efficiency was.

Most of the "Faster" claims are for startup/ wakeup....
I don't see anything once started being faster I see quite the opposite with all of the live titles stuff
Reason being internet speed pretty much dictates how well or fast they work plus a really weird M$ server :)

I did notice because I always kill the silly lock screen 10 does respond a lot faster than all prior builds I've used
So some progress has been noticed by me
OS in general is still very unreliable from day to day being the update system makes it that way.

I read that cpuid was completely removed by a person 10 saying it was not compatible and was removed
I believe it was the developer saying this :D

True Mike but mate my laptop I am on now is a 14 second power on to login and going from Start to the Control Panel or my email from the taskbar in probably less than a heartbeat - why want anything faster?

I think the time I tried it it was those wretched panels and convoluted way of getting to the Control Panel for example left me a with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach - if that was faster then I will eat my socks:sarc:

I suppose running multiple applications as one might for a business it might be faster but for the life of me I cannot see it.

Most people are using hdd's not ssd's so anyone using a hdd would likely see better startup times
Win-7 on a ssd there really is no startup time difference if there is it's minimal
That is also taking into consideration hibernation is off in both 7 & 10 ;)

MS is doing it by withdrawing support from Win 7 and Win 8.1 after a certain period of time. besides making it those OSes less secure, some of the new features that had been fuctional will no longer function. What really bites is many users already had Skylake systems before this was announced. Read here for more of this despicable action by MS and Intel.
