I have a compaq cq56-115dx latop, and looking for some input on a problem I have. I attempted to upgrage my ram from 2 gb to 5gb. The 4 gb chip went in ok on the bottom slot, however, when placing second 1 gb chip, I accidentally broke the levers. Since it was now broken I decided, to see what would happen if I gently replaced cover, to hold chip in place, ad screwed cover on firmly. Turned on laptop, and all is working fine, including all 5 gb memory is available. My question is should I leave it the way it is, or should I have it fixed properly. FYI the cover over the chip is vented.

If it is going to be stationary it's not an immediate concern but if you are moving it around. I don't think you should leave it unattended for long. It's really not good for the slot or the memory in the meantime, and if it jiggles and comes loose just the right way, you'll wind up with a dead chip and slot, and possibly even a problem with the motherboard.

Hi! Henry, welcome to 7F :)

For now, I would leave it the way it is because to have it fixed properly would require a Motherboard replacement.

Did you hear any clicks or feel any type of detent when you went to seat the stick?

As long as you own this machine you will have to keep this episode in the back of your mind because at some point you may start to experience BSODs that could be related to memory.

Then the first thing you would have to do would be to re-seat the stick, and that would probably fix the issue - if - it did not cause any other problems.

Best advice? Be gentle with it, and it should last you for years to come.

Thanks for your replies. As for moving it around i don't, the only reason I have a laptop is to conserve space. I am retired, sitting around doing nothing. Anyway as much as I would like to leave it as it is, I did call hp, and to my surprise, they are willing to fix it under warranty. The only regret is I will be without the laptop for about 2 weeks, this is why I was inquiring about leaving it as is. I am kind of leary about sending it in. In the recent past, it took 3 months to get a replacement! I seem to be having nothing but bad luck with hp/compaq. Anyhow I have two days to decide, they are shipping me the material to ship back.

Henry that is good news. When I first looked it up some of the dates go back several years so I did not think of asking about the warranty, what is two weeks in the grand scheme of things?

You don't have anything valuable on it do you....Like bank passwords, photos, correspondence?

Was that three months to replace what you now have? Well, good luck, and may the RMA gods smile on you.

Post back, and let us know how you make out.

Yes the one I am shipping this Friday or Monday, was a replacement that took 3 months to get, from the nvidia class action lawsuit settlement.

Hopefully I should get it back by August 1st.

That was a rather large settlement, hopefully with this being different it will not take as long.
