Brother HL-1230 driver problem

My friend got this rather old laser printer, but it is not working with Win7 x86.

Win7 x86 does have driver for it build in, and at boot it finds the printer, and "install" the driver. The printer is showing up in "printer and other devices", but when I then rightclick on the printericon and selecting printerproperties, it says, that there is no driver installed for this printer, and ask if it should install one. I click Yes, and it seems to install OK, I can then see that the printer is connected to the parrallel-port (LPT1, but when I try to click on "print testpage", it writes back "access denied", and after that it ask if Windows should bee lookig for a solution. I click yes, and it is testing, but find no errors. I close the window, and rightclick on the printericon again. And it is starting all over again. No printerdriver is installed for this printer, and then ask if it should install one.

I have tried to remove the printer, rebooted, and the printer is then found again, but no difference. I have downloaded the Vistadriver, and tried this but no difference.

Any ideas what I can try now? The driver that is buildin in Win7 is WHQL certified.

Can you get to the Advanced tab to se if the name of the driver is correct.

Check the Ports tab also.

And select the printer, choose File > Printer Server Properties and verify here as well.

Yes, the advanced tab shows the correct name.
Ports tab shows it is connected to LPT1: (parallel port) which is also correct.

Your last line I'm not sure about? Where do I find File I have to choose? In the window where printers are listed, there is no "file" menu?

Sorry, you're correct.

I was using my Vista machine at the time.

There is no Server Properties menu entry in Windows 7.

You stated it was connected to the correct port, but is the driver showing up as Brother HL-1230?

Yes, it is. Also in Device Manager it is shown as Brother HL - 1230.

Unfortuanly this printer does not have an USB port, only the LPT1: so I can't try USB or other.

BTW, when XP and Vista was installed on the same PC, there was no problem with this printer, so I guess that I don't have to mess around in BIOS to change settings for the parallel-port (EPP, DMA, aso)

pst ... is it your car on the picture? I wish I could afford such car, but Denmark have some of the most expencive cars in the world because of taxes. I did earlier own some older USA cars, a Camaro '79, Mustang 5.0 Cobra '80, and last a Pontiac Fiero V6 GT from '87. Sorry for off topic

Have you just tried printing something from an application?

the car, it's mine. if fact I've owned it twice. it's a factory matching numbers 1971 NovaSS

When I first installed Win7, I had to install my Brothers Printer Drivers using the CD which came with it... then it did work correctly.

I have tried the CD to the printer, but it just came up with a window saying that this OS was not supported (The CD is so old, that there are no Vista drivers on it)

I had the same problem. Then I made a google serch and made a wild guess.
windows HL-1230 - Google Search

In the link there is a link to download a driver "...1230/1440..." So I tried runing the printer with the HL-1440 and I think it works fine for me. (I am using a Paralell to USB cable)

I have set up a Brother HL-1230 on Windows 7 successfully.

Download the vista drivers from the Brother website. Unzip them and when you copme to install the printer browse to where you have unzipped the drivers
