Browers can not access internet...

Hi,

New to this forum.

I am having a strange problem with a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit system. I can not connect to the internet with IE9, FireFox or Chrome. Dropbox is not loading and unable run it. I have Mac Drive software installed and it can not start because it loos for the internet to verify license. I can not go to 192.168.1.1 (can not ping it either) which is my router. When starting IE I get a blank white window and after about 20 seconds it closes automatically, Firefox and Chrome both open but can not navigate to any web page. I can however ping from CMD prompt www.yahoo.com, www.aol.com and I launched a gadget with news headlines from MSNBC and it updates fine and displays current headlines. So, some apps can see the internet. I did the following: uninstalled IE, Firefox and Chrome and reinstalled, I ran the manul Winsock reset commands via command line. Disabled network connection and enabled. Ran microsofts Windows Internet Fix. Released all IP information and renewed. I can print to my wireless printer and I do see my local network. All other computers on the router are working (wireless and wired).

Any help would be appreciated!

That is strange. Especially since you CANNOT ping a numeric ip address, yet you can ping an alpha one. So the DNS is working. Did you power down/power up your router/cable modem?

I am going to power cycle the router, I believe I done this already but will do it again just in case.

From the command line, did you try pinging anything by IP other than your router? For example, what happens if you ping google.com by name ("ping google.com") and then by IP, such as with "ping 74.125.53.105"?
What firewall and AV software are you running, if any? Have you tried disabling or uninstalling it?

I ping'd using the numeric IP address and I got a reply as well. I recycled router and still have the issue.

As for firwall, was using windows firewall and Norton 360. Disabled firewall and uninstalled Norton 360 and still have issue.

Web pages like yahoo, aol, and even your router's (if it offers one) listen for web page connections via port 80 on the website's computer. When you go to a web page your are initiating a TCP outgoing connection to their incomming port 80. Most firewalls allow outgoing connections to all ports for all protocols but some 3rd party programs like Norton may try to block some outgoing connections. (I hope you used Norton's special uninstall tool they provide on their website to do the uninstall.) As a test of the firewall issue, you could temporarily turn off your Windows Firewall and the router's as well.

One wonders if the Norton product needs updating, as lack of updates to it's own database can cause it to shut down other common http:// services... just ensure your system clock's right too, time and date... in case there's been a CMOS blip and something's slipped...

Smells like malware at this point. Can you run Malwarebytes?

Haven't tried Malware bytes. Will do that now and see if I can install it. Thanks for all the help so far.
